Outstanding Citizen nominations sought, award presented at fair

Nominations are being sought for the Outstanding Canadian County Citizen to be recognized at the upcoming 67th Annual Canadian County Free Fair, set for Aug. 23-28.

As is tradition, the individual will receive the first-place winning cookie jar entered in the fair.

Anyone can nominate a fellow Canadian County resident whom they feel is deserving of this recognition.

Please include name of person nominated, address and phone number, name of person submitting nomination and phone number, and two paragraphs describing why this person qualifies for the award.

Grand Dinner auction winners gather at CFL

At the recent virtual fundraiser for the Center of Family Love, one of the hottest auction items was the Grand Dinner.

The Grand Dinner is an event created by Oklahoma City restaurants and providers exclusively for the Center of Family Love.

The organizer of the event is David Egan of El Reno, who serves as general manager of Cattlemen’s Steakhouse in Oklahoma City.

VFW Post 382 to host informational breakfast July 17

El Reno’s VFW Post 382 will treat veterans and their family members to breakfast July 17 to help answer questions concerning what is available after a loved one who served passes away.

Nancy Salsman with the VFW said the breakfast will be served starting at 9 a.m. at the VFW, 1515 S. Rock Island.

The breakfast will feature National VFW Service Officer Robby Clark and State VFW Service Officer Bill Hinds.

The pair will answer questions related to benefits as well as what military honors may be available for a deceased loved one.

El Reno mayor to cook for county Republicans

Canadian County Republicans are hosting their Third Annual Cookout on Saturday, July 17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The event will be held at the El Reno Public Safety Center on SW 27th Street.

El Reno Mayor Matt White will again preside over the grill making fried onion burgers.

A special guest speaker will keep things lively as will a live auction.

STEAM campers

Around 75 campers across Oklahoma recently graduated from the SAGE STEAM Camp held at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

The Southwest Alliance for Girls Enrichment (SAGE) in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts/Humanities and Mathematics (STEAM) Camp was a weeklong, residential
summer camp hosted on SWOSU’s campus for girls who are entering the eighth and ninth grades this fall.

Campers were chosen after being nominated by their teachers and undergoing a phone interview, which evaluated STEAM interest and the need for this opportunity.

El Reno Class of ’56 to gather

El Reno High School Class of 1956 will meet at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, July 14 at Adams Park to visit and have a fried onion hamburger.

El Reno Wranglers discuss upcoming rodeo, horse show

The El Reno Wranglers held their monthly meeting recently at the 4-H building.

Jimmy Johnston led in the flag salute, while Gary Sorrells offered prayer before the potluck dinner.

June events included a trail ride at Gary and Linda Bunn’s as well as the Chickasha parade.

There was discussion of the upcoming annual rodeo that will be held at the new fairgrounds Aug. 27, followed by the Canadian County Horse Show Aug. 28.

Next Wranglers meeting will be held July 8.

UCO releases spring honor rolls

The University of Central Oklahoma recently announced a list of students named to the university’s honor rolls for the spring 2021 semester.

Students recognized on the President’s Honor Roll recorded a straight-A or 4.0 GPA, with those named to the Dean’s Honor Roll achieving a 3.5 GPA or better for the semester and no grade lower than a B.

Cash Flow and Forage meeting set for July 14

The Canadian OSU Cooperative Extension Center will host a Cash Flow and Forage insurance meeting July 14 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Canadian Valley Technology Center, Rooms 2A-2B.

JJ Jones, district OSU economist, will be the guest speaker.

LRP and PRF are both subsidized insurance products sold by private insurance agents similar to traditional crop insurance. Both programs are easily adapted to beef cattle producers of all sizes in Oklahoma.

Birth - Brand Hayze Denny

Body

BOY – Bailey and Paige Denny of El Reno are parents of a boy, Brand Hayze, born June 17 at Mercy Hospital.

Brand weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces and measured 19.5 inches in length.

Maternal grandparents are Jeff and Mindy Hesser of Watonga. Great-grandparents are Jack and Billie Hesser and the late Gloria Hesser, and Carol Hiner and the late Carl Hiner, all of Stillwater.
