Cougars earn first win of ’22

Redlands Community College’s soccer team made a pair of first-half goals stand up en route to a 2-1 win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

It was the first win of the season for the Cougars, who improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the NJCAA Region 2 standings.

Moriah Reed scored an unassisted goal to get Redlands on the scoreboard.

Amya Lindsay made it a 2-0 match with a goal off an assist from Stephany Soto.

El Reno Wranglers discuss events

The El Reno Wranglers met recently for their monthly meeting with Trish Duncan leading in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by prayer offered by Gary Sorrells.

The club discussed upcoming events including a Play Day set for Sept. 17, Veterans Day Parade Nov. 6 and a Thanksgiving dinner/auction Nov. 13.

Next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the 4-H building.

Third-ranked Chieftains extend winning ways; Tigers climbing up in poll

Since dropping its first loss of the fall season, Calumet High School’s baseball team has rebounded with a six-game winning streak over several notable ranked squads.

The Chieftains, holding steady at third in Class B with a 15-1 overall record, defeated Hammon (20th /Class B) 12-6 and Ripley (11th/Class A) 1-0 in the Dover Festival along with a 12-5 decision over cross-county rival Okarche (21st/Class A).

Operation Christmas Child volunteers hosting workshops

Body

Operation Christmas Child volunteers are hosting two identical Project Leader Workshops on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The first is from 10 a.m. to noon at Yukon Church, 11715 NW 10th Street, Yukon. The second workshop is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1340 S. 13th Street, Kingfisher.

The workshops are open to anyone who packs shoeboxes or is interested in packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

Union City making strides against tough teams; Calumet snaps losing streak

Union City High School’s fast-pitch softball team has logged only three wins in its last seven games, but head coach Cody Schmidt can see signs of the Tigers becoming a tough opponent come playoffs.

Among the four losses were narrow setbacks to Binger-Oney 4-3, Leedey 4-2, Empire 4-3, and a 9-1 loss to an under-rated Rush Springs.

Union City’s wins came in the Dover Festival against Enid’s junior varsity 13-5, Pioneer/Pleasant Vale 12-0, and the host school 15-3. The Tigers are 14-13 on the season after the seven-game run.

Blending the arts and tunes

El Reno will host its third annual Battle of the Bands in combination with an arts festival.

The events are being put on by the Centre Theatre for the Arts along with the El Reno Arts Council.

Kristin Richardson of the Centre Theatre for the Arts said the two-day event will be Sept. 9-10 with music performed downtown at Petree Plaza.

Sound and lighting will be provided by Mike Freeman of FM Audio Production Inc.

Red Dirt Axecitement, 215 S. Country Club, is a new axe-throwing venue in El Reno. Coby said it is the place to have fun, relieve stress, relax and enjoy a new kind of sport that is quickly spreading across the United States.
