Tigers snap out of slide; CHS drops close bid

After home setbacks to cross-county rival Calumet and Elmore City, Union City High School’s fast-pitch softball team snapped the two-game losing streak with two wins in the Covington-Douglas Festival.

The Tigers beat the host school 3-0 before posting a 12-0 shutout of Cherokee to improve to 11-8 on the season.

Union City went 14-of-57 (.246) from the plate in the three games after the loss to Calumet, getting doubles each from Emily Griggs and Oceanna Schranz.

Griggs (.375) led the team with three hits, a run and four runs batted in.

Calumet, UC win streaks come to end

A nine-game win streak to open the fall season came to a grinding halt as Calumet High School’s baseball team, ranked third in Class B, dropped a 5-4 game in extra innings to Amber-Pocasset.

Ampo, ranked No.8 in Class A, scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning on a wild pitch.

Calumet logged nine hits in the loss as Carson Cooper went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Kyler Thiessen drove in a run and scored once off two base hits.

Hunter Arnold, Kaleb Thiessen, Caleb Meschberger and Kingston Arnold added a base hit each in the loss.

RCC harriers open ’22 season with third-place efforts

Redlands Community College’s cross-country teams kicked off the 2022 season recently with a pair of third-place finishes at the Bucks Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain.

The women’s team ran the 5,000-meter course with an overall time of two hours and 13:19 seconds, with the average time per runner being 26:29. Alicen Williams was the top finisher in 10th place with a time of 25:29 after running a mile pace of 8:12.

El Reno Carnegie Library has a ton of stuff for the community to enjoy and El Reno Public Schools is on the verge of having its largest enrollment ever. And if you ever wanted to drive a school bus, your ship just came in.

This bit of information came out of last week’s El Reno Now gathering. The monthly event is hosted by Mayor Matt White and School Superintendent Matt Goucher.

The breakfast event raised more than $450 for The Lord’s Harvest as well, as dozens turned out for the gathering at the Public Safety Center off SW 27th Street.

The influx of special interest money into Oklahoma politics has taken center stage.

Across the nation, there are similar stories. Political candidates and office holders have changed the way they not only run races but represent their constituents in many cases.

That may not necessarily be for the best.

During a recent town hall meeting at Redlands Community College, Congressman Frank Lucas said the time has come for campaign finance reform.

Fair wraps up

The 68th Annual Canadian County Free Fair wrapped up its four-day run over the weekend as good weather brought out a large crowd on the final night.

The fair included midway food and fun, crafts, vendors, a wide range of contests for residents, livestock judging and barrel racing.

Banner bond vote falls short

Some 54.35 percent of voters cast yes votes in Banner’s school bond election.

However, the proposed $6 million bond issue to fund a building addition failed because a 60 percent majority is required to pass a school bond in Oklahoma.

With nine polling places reporting results Aug. 23, there were 331 votes for the proposition and 278 votes against the proposition.

Another 35 yes votes were needed to approve the Banner Public Schools (BPS) bond project.
