Advocates hope 988 implementation will help with mental health issues

Body

With the recent implementation of 988, mental health advocates hope it will be easier than ever for those in crisis to reach out for help.

Formerly an 11-digit phone number, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number is now the national 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which operates 24/7 and offers services for a variety of mental health-related calls.

Carrie Slatton-Hodges, Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services commissioner, said the helpline is a major step forward in preventing suicides in Oklahoma.

The weekend weather was perfect, almost, as the Centre Theatre for the Arts teamed with the El Reno Arts Council to host a Battle of the Bands and Art Show in downtown El Reno.

This was the third annual Battle of the Bands and produced local talent like Shady Five Eight that played well into the evening Friday and Saturday.

Judges for the event were Mayor Matt White, Police Officer Troy George and Randy Edmondson. Rain and cooler temps moved in late Saturday, but organizers said fans stayed to cheer the late-playing acts.
