Fast start, late surge allows Chieftains to extend streak

CALUMET – A guard-heavy lineup scored the first 13 points as Calumet High School’s boys basketball team extended its regular-season win streak with a 57-40 win over Lomega in its home opener.

The Chieftains moved to 3-0 on the season with the non-conference victory.

Calumet has now won 28 straight regular-season games dating back to last season, with the 57 scored against Lomega being the third lowest scoring output among those wins.

Second-half miscues hamper girls in 78-29 loss to Lomega

CALUMET – Double-digit turnovers in the second half, caused by a pressure defense by Lomega, haunted Calumet High School’s girls basketball team in a 78-29 loss to the Raiders.

The non-conference loss dropped Calumet to 0-3 on the season.

Calumet’s offense was held to single digits in all four periods as the Chieftains trailed 20-7 after one period and 40-13 at the break. The Raiders pressure defense stepped up in the third, leading to a 30-7 scoring edge and a 70-20 lead.

Lomega was outscored 9-8 over the final eight minutes of the 49-point win.

Thirteen RCC players score in lopsided victory

Thirteen players scored, including four in double digits, as Redlands Community College women’s basketball team jumped back into the win column with a 94-44 victory over Southern Nazarene University’s junior varsity.

The win snapped a two-game slide as the Cougars dropped road games in Kansas to Barton (76-60) and top-ranked Hutchison (81-59) community colleges. Redlands is now 4-2 on the season after the win over the Crimson Storm.

After having a three-game win streak snapped with a road loss, Redlands Community College men’s basketball team jumped back into the win column with a 106-55 score over On-Point Academy.

The victory over the cross-town rival moved the Cougars to 6-2 on the season following a 94-87 loss to Hesston College.

Camren Hunt scored 20 points in the win over On-Point and booked 26 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the two-game set. Henry Sanchez added a line of 22 points, 12 boards and five steals.

Union City defense sparks win, Calumet, Okarche suffer losses

UNION CITY – A quick burst of points late in the second period, sparked by its defense, allowed Union City High School’s girls basketball team to stay undefeated on the young season.

The Tigers moved to 3-0 on the year with a 49-22 victory over Binger-Oney.

The win pushed Union City to 2-0 in the Washita Valley Conference standings.

Both teams struggled to score early as Binger-Oney led 5-2 before Union City got two free throws by Breanna Goad and a Kamryn Cook basket to lead 6-5. The Bobcats got a late basket to take a 7-6 lead into the second period.
