For the first time in two years due to COVID-19, El Reno High School’s boys basketball program held a youth skills camp at Jenks Simmons Field House.

A record-high 78 campers in second through ninth grades attended the three-day camp which was open to all boys and girls who could not attend the upcoming EHS girls youth camp.

There were two divisions for the team tournament, each crowning a champion. There were also awards given for the top free-throw shooter, hot spot shooter, speed dribble and ball handling.

County players earn accolades from baseball coaches

Body

Tyler Tignor admits he’s been fortunate to have three players selected for the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association’s All-State Team, but his last just may be the most special of his career at Calumet High School.

Outfielder Jaxon Olive was one of 10 Canadian County players named to one of the seven OBCA West All-Star by Class squads, which is a prerequisite to being considered for All-State honors.

However, among those 10, only Olive, Mustang’s Kyle Mantooth and Piedmont’s Cole Riggs were elevated to All-State status.

Faith in her game

Having had five of the most prolific female scorers in El Reno High School history play before her, El Reno graduate Ashlyn Evans-Thompson never felt like she was breaking new ground during her career.

That all changes Saturday.

Evans-Thompson will add yet another first to her record-setting story at El Reno when she becomes the first female player in school history to compete in the famed Faith 7 Bowl Basketball Game.

WEATHERFORD – One last outing as teammates proved to be a winning combination for three El Reno High School graduates in last week’s Western Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association’s All-Star Games.

Brayden Fulton, Dacus Cooper and Vincent Walker each played a key role in helping the North squad secure a 5-4 win over the South in the Large School Game.

“It was really fun to get out here and have fun with those guys one more time,” said Fulton.

Calumet’s Tignor, Olive fall short in All-Star outing

Body

WEATHERFORD – Tyler Tignor thought that last week’s Western Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game would be his last coaching stint with his former standout player – Calumet graduate Jaxon Olive.

Tignor, who will be the new athletic director at Hammon come fall, coached the North squad for a fifth time in the WOBCA Small School Game. It ended on a sour note with a 5-1 loss to the South squad.

However, Tignor and Olive will get another shot to go out together as winners.

The majority of football-playing schools across Oklahoma began knocking off the winter rust from their playbooks in preparation for the 2022 season – which starts in 92 days.

However, there is a different atmosphere surrounding El Reno High School’s football program as the Indians kicked off spring drills last week with a new head coach and two lead coordinators.
