Indians need help to make postseason after road loss to GHS ’Jays

While not officially eliminated from postseason contention, El Reno High School’s boys soccer team will need to win out and get some help from other squads after dropping a 5-0 road match at Guthrie.

The shutout loss, the third in league play, dropped El Reno to 3-7 on the season and 1-4 in the District 5A-2 standings.

The Indians are sitting at seventh but are just a game and a half out of fourth place with two district matches left against Guymon and Carl Albert..

The top four teams in each district make the playoffs.

Linksters slip in recent bids at CA, preview

Slipping back over the 400-stroke plateau in its last two outings, El Reno High School’s boys golf team posted a pair of 15th-place mid-season finishes.

The Indians, playing down two starters, were 15th in the Carl Albert Invitational on the John Conrad Course in Midwest City with a round of 408. The event also served as the 2023 Suburban Conference Championships, with El Reno taking fifth among league schools.

Calumet, UC log late-season winning streaks

Union City and Calumet high school’s baseball teams are riding late-season win streaks following recent tournament action.

Union City, ranked 18th in Class A, improved to 15-5 after winning three of its last four games. The Tigers went 2-1 in the Moss Pirates Classic with wins over Earlsboro (3-2) and Vanoss (10-2) and a 12-6 loss to Class B’s 12th-ranked Buffalo Valley. The Tigers then beat Binger-Oney 3-1.

An early trek around the layout for the Class 5A state tourney was not a memorable one for El Reno High School’s girls golf team as the Indians took 13th place in the 2023 Ardmore Invitational.

Playing Dornick Hills Country Club, El Reno shot a 447 team score after being plagued by four putts due to what head coach Cameron Wilkins called “lightning fast greens.”

“We should have been around 10th or so if we could have figured out the greens sooner,” said Wilkins.

Union City, Calumet drop multiple games

Body

Tinkering with its lineup ahead of the pending playoffs, Union City High School’s slow-pitch softball team dropped three of four games against all ranked opponents.

The Tigers, who hold the No.6 spot in Class 2A at 16-12 on the season, fell to Class 3A’s sixth-ranked Amber-Pocasset 15-0.

The other setbacks were to Class 2A’s top-ranked Shattuck (13-1) and 17th-ranked Okarche (9-4).

The win was a 9-0 shutout of Class 2A’s 14th-ranked Central.

Redlands wins OCAC title, headed to district in Arizona

Placing six golfers in the top seven spots of the individual medalist chase catapulted Redlands Community College’s golf team to the 2023 Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

Playing at Lake Murray State Park Golf Course in Ardmore, Redlands carded a 36-hole total of 653 to win by 85 strokes over Seminole State College. Murray State (806) took third.

The event also serves as the NJCAA Region 2 Championships.

Walk-off single leads South Arkansas past RCC in Region 2 series

Body

League leader South Arkansas got a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Redlands Community College 6-5 and sweep the four-game series over the Cougars.

Redlands slipped to 17-23 for the season after losing the first three games of the series by scores of 12-2, 12-1 and 11-4. The Cougars are now 9-11 in the NJCAA Region 2, Division 2 standings but retain the fifth-place spot.

Series hitting for the Cougars slipped to a .168 average after Redlands went 17-of-101 from the plate with five extra base hits.

EHS girls card low round, team score, take third

Carding both its lowest team and individual rounds since Cameron Wilkins took over the program, El Reno High School’s girls golf team took third place last week in its own invitational.

Playing at Crimson Creek Golf Course, El Reno shot a 397 - the first time under the 400-stroke barrier in two seasons.

Heritage Hall won the 10-team title with a 358, followed by Choctaw at 383.

El Reno was paced by Skylar Ayers who carded a 90 (45/45) for the lowest round by an EHS golfer under Wilkins. She was sixth overall in the individual medalist chase.

Singles, doubles place at Suburban Conference Tennis Championships

El Reno High School’s tennis team took part in the 2023 Suburban Conference Championships recently, with the girls taking sixth place and the boys squad placing seventh.

The girls were paced by Bri Barksdale, who took the consolation title in No.2 singles following a 6-0/6-0 sweep of Del City’s Lanise Robinson. Barksdale went 2-1 with a bye after a first-round loss.

Jayna Graham, playing No.1 singles, took sixth following a 6-4/6-0 loss to Elgin’s Grace Trueblood in the fifth-place match. Ireland Scott and Dalanda Robb placed sixth at No.2 doubles with a 1-2 record.
