Girls have rough day at regional

Navigating through what head coach Jennifer Myers called a “rough day,” El Reno High School’s girls tennis team failed to advance any players to the 2023 Class 5A Girls Tennis Championships.

Playing in the Class 5A West Regional in Duncan, El Reno logged two seventh-place finishes from its doubles teams, while singles players took eighth.

Despite posting two of its better rounds of the season, El Reno High School’s boys golf squad missed out on team and individual passes to the 2023 Class 5A Boys State Golf Championships.

Playing in the 5A West Regional on the Augusta Course at Cedar Valley Golf Club in Guthrie, El Reno fell short of the final team pass by 74 strokes, which went to Noble with a 36-hole total of 666.

Duncan (582), Piedmont (614), Carl Albert (629), Bishop McGuinness (637) and Altus (639) were the other five schools to make state.

Rallies work against UC Tigers in A-2 Regional Championship

A pair of rallies went against Union City High School’s baseball team as the 18th-ranked Tigers dropped back-to-back games in the Class A, Region 2 Championships at Canute.

Union City jumped out to a 7-1 lead of 15th-ranked Hydro-Eakly in the first game, before watching the Bobcats string together an eight-run rally to take the contest by a 9-7 score.

The Tigers fell behind 7-1 to Hominy in an elimination game before mounting a late rally of their own to cut that deficit to two runs. However, the Tigers had their season end with a 7-5 setback to fall to 20-7 overall.

Stennett HR helps RCC avoid sweep by Pioneers

Marshyl Stennett’s three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning allowed Redlands Community College’s baseball team to avoid being swept by Western Oklahoma State College in a key regional series.

The Pioneers, currently third in the NJCAA Region 2, Division 2 standings, won three games of the series by scores of 3-2, 9-0 and 10-2.

Stennett’s homer carried the Cougars to a 9-8 victory in game three of the series which was played in Altus due to wet conditions at RCC’s Don Brown Field.

Mother Nature outruns thinclads

MIDWEST CITY – While El Reno High School’s track team was posting better times and measurements, it was Mother Nature that proved to be the fastest mover at the 2023 Suburban Conference Track and Field Championships.

Despite starting three hours early, a fast-moving rainstorm forced the meet to be called off with four events on the track and one field event left unsettled.

“With the regional meet so close, the coaches didn’t want the take the chance of someone getting hurt or pulling a muscle,” said El Reno head coach Graham Snelding.

Indians close in lower half of stout Bluejays Bash field

El Reno High School’s boys golf team tuned up for Monday’s Class 5A West Regional Championships by shooting a 379 team score at last week’s 2023 Guthrie Bluejays Bash.

The Indians finished in the lower half of the stout team standings despite getting a squad-leading round of 88 from Baylor Pearson. Cooper Park and Jackson Albrecht both carded rounds of 93.

Charles Woolworth carded a 105, while Jett Ramsey rounded out the scoring with a 111.

The regional event is being held on the Aqua Canyon Course at Cimarron National Golf Club.

Calumet blanks field to punch state ticket

CALUMET – In a game that was over for all practical purposes after the first inning, Calumet High School’s baseball team defeated 13th-ranked Mulhall-Orlando 14-0 Sunday to win the Class B, Region 4 Championship.

The win sends the Chieftains, ranked fourth in the state, to the 2023 Class B Oklahoma State High School Baseball Championships for the first time in spring ball.

Calumet, which improved to 19-7 on the season with its seventh straight win, will be making its third state appearance in the sport after fall trips in 1975 and 2022.

Union City makes history with state tournament spot

Cody Schmidt’s last tournament as Union City High School’s slow-pitch softball coach will be the biggest of his career as well as the school’s, after the Tigers defeated Frontier 12-7 to clinch the runner-up spot at the 2023 Class 2A, Region 1 Championships.

The top two teams from each of the four regionals make the Class 2A State High School Slow-Pitch Championships, which start Wednesday at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Union City, ranked sixth in the state, will play at 10 a.m. against fourth-ranked Cyril.

Dodging the weather

DEL CITY – While other schools in the league were left scrambling to make up lost games due to rain, a little sacrifice by El Reno High School’s baseball team led to the Indians third straight sweep.

Giving up a home game to set up a road doubleheader, El Reno run-ruled Del City twice by scores of 11-1 and 19-1 to lock up fifth place in the District 5A-1 standings with a 6-8 record.

El Reno High School’s track teams took part in the first of two meets last week at the 2023 Weatherford Eagle Invitational, with the boys team taking 13th overall.

Bugg Elledge had the highest finish among the boys with a sixth-place effort in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.90 seconds. Latin Everheart took 10th place with a 25.11 effort.
