Riddell retains Zone 1 seat on CVTC Board

A Canadian Valley Technology Center board member withstood a challenge to retain his Board of Education post. Incumbent Dean Riddell of Yukon on Tuesday won CV Tech’s Zone 1 board election by a 62.67 percent majority.

Some 4,983 votes were cast in 102 precincts across the multi-county Canadian Valley school district, with Riddell besting challenger Cotton Ruzicka of Yukon by a 3,123-1,860 vote.

Structure fire

Body

Two units from the El Reno Fire Department and a third from El Reno FCI responded to this house fire in the 400 block of South Barker Avenue Wednesday morning.

According to the ERPD incident report, the structure received $80,000 damage and loss of contents was estimated at $20,000.

BlueSTEM to hold symposium April 18

BlueSTEM AgriLearning Center’s 2024 Agriscience Symposium will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18 in the Austin Family Conference Center at Redlands Community College, 1300 S. Country Club Road.

BlueSTEM students representing five school districts will display their agriscience research project posters.

Dip in the pond

According to El Reno Police Department Capt. David Beaty, someone set the trash can on fire and a bystander tossed the can into the pond to put out the flames.

Oklahoma senators target special-needs discrimination

Under existing state law, Oklahoma public schools can treat children with special needs differently than other children whenever a family seeks an open transfer into another district.

Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma City, said the discrimination against those children, who have an individualized education program (IEP), is likely illegal and sets up the state for legal problems.

“I know for a fact that IEP transfers are not treated with the same respect that students who do not have some special needs are,” Treat said.

Senate passes resolution to repeal Biden administration’s stance on Paraguay beef

The U.S. Senate easily passed a resolution to repeal a Biden administration rule allowing for beef to be imported from Paraguay.

The measure, introduced by Democrat Jon Tester of Montana and Republican Mike Rounds of South Dakota, passed on a bipartisan 70-25 vote.

Body

A livestock show celebrating students with special needs is believed to be a first for Canadian County, but most likely not the last.

More than 75 special needs students from around the county took part in the event last week.

Held at the Canadian County Expo Center, the event also attracted 40 students who serve as PALs for their special needs classmates, as well as 45 members of the various FFA chapters in the county.

War in Ukraine hurting Oklahoma wheat farmers

From a farm in Oklahoma to growing wheat in Moldova, Kelsey Walters is now looking to her past to secure her future. 

Walters grew up on her family’s sixth-generation farm in western Oklahoma. She graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in agriculture economics, and was placed in Moldova as a Peace Corps volunteer where she met her husband, Iurie, and began a wheat farming operation.

But now their livelihood and that of wheat growers across Oklahoma is threatened by the war in Ukraine.
