Sand Creek: Vivid reminder of how humans view one another

Body

Did you ever hear of Silas Soule?

I hadn’t either until attending the dedication of the Sand Creek Massacre Monument and Chief White Antelope blanket ceremony at Concho.

In a word, the gathering was powerful.

Sorrow. Anger. Hope. Resiliency.

Biden leading America’s downturn

Body

President Joe Biden recently delivered an address during a joint session of Congress on the eve of his 100th day in office.

While it is always an honor to listen to any president speak to Congress, the president’s message unfortunately missed the mark, especially since his actions thus far have been marked by partisan and progressive proposals and misguided unilateral actions.

For this year’s annual Citizenship Award Dinner, the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs was honored to have sports journalist Jason Whitlock as our keynote speaker. Whitlock is known for his refreshing takes on sports and social issues and didn’t disappoint.

REAL ID deadline extended

Body

The deadline to obtain a REAL ID has been pushed back to May 3, 2023, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Department of Homeland Security made the announcement last week.

The federal government says air travelers 18 or older still will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card or another ID that meets Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines for security checkpoints to fly domestically and internationally.

Letter to the Editor: Riverside school issues

Body

To the Editor:

To the patrons of Riverside School, I want to apologize for my actions in the last several days, but I have been under a lot of stress in concern for our wonderful school.

This school has a great history, but the direction it is going is very sad. It has approximately 119 students. I know COVID can be a reason, but good leadership can be another.

Regulatory reform will foster innovation and growth

Body

As Oklahoma’s political leaders continue to search for ways to fire up economic growth, now is the time to address many of the problems they have been avoiding for years.

In order to make people prosperous, you have to understand the nature of both your economy and the larger society in which it is embedded.

While it has taken most of us several decades to catch up to his thinking, it is safe to say that most observers agree that Peter Drucker was right that our society and economy are founded on knowledge.

Film rebate proves positive results for Oklahoma

Body

For years, we’ve worked to expand and grow Oklahoma’s economy.

We’re still very much an oil and gas state and we will continue to be. Aerospace is our number two leading economic generator and agriculture remains a top economic driver.

But as we continue efforts to diversify our economy, the film industry has become increasingly important to Oklahoma and is still growing.

OU gets warning on free speech

Body

It’s hard to say what’s worse — that the University of Oklahoma is accused of trying to force staff and students to endorse positions they do not support, or that college leaders thought they could keep those efforts a secret.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), whose mission is to “defend and sustain the individual rights of students and faculty members at America’s colleges and universities,” recently focused its attention on OU’s mandatory diversity training.

Bioethics in a Brave New World

Body

In the late 1980s, as a pre-med major at the University of Pittsburgh, I pulled many all-nighters at Scaife Hall at Pitt’s School of Medicine.

My friend Dirk and I knew the only way we would ever make breakfast at the cafeterias at the Towers or Lothrop dorm-halls was by staying up all night studying and then sauntering in zombie-like at 6 a.m. for eggs and pancakes.

Otherwise, the typical early morning fare for me and my buddies was “O Fries” from the iconic Original Hot Dog Shop, washed down with cheap beer around 2 a.m.
