Pair file for Canadian County Fair Board

There will be a Canadian County Fair Board election after two candidates filed for one seat.

Jason Cooper of El Reno is challenging District 2 fair board member Ken Carpenter of Mustang for the next three-year term on the nine-member board.

Cooper, age 51, filed Jan. 30. The challenger is a cattle rancher and yard foreman at the OKC West Livestock Market.

Carpenter, age 62, filed Jan. 27. The incumbent, an auctioneer and realtor, has served on the fair board since February 2012.

Absentee ballots for Maple bond election now available

Voters in Canadian County who want absentee ballots mailed to them for the March 4 Maple School Special Election should apply now, county election board secretary Allen Arnold said.

Absentee ballots are available to all registered voters, provided they are eligible to vote in the election requested. No excuse is needed to vote by absentee ballot.

The deadline for requesting an absentee ballot is 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17. Voters can submit a request using the OK Voter Portal at oklahoma.gov/elections/ovp.

Canadian County OSU Extension to host free Spring Ag Day Seminar

The Canadian County OSU Extension Center will host a free Early Spring Ag Day Seminar. 

The event will be Feb. 14, with the first session starting at 9 a.m. and will focus on Cow Calf Nutrition, presented by Marty New, OSU Extension livestock specialist.

The majority of Oklahoma cow herds are spring calving herds, making this a vital session for cattle producers.

Early spring cropping systems generally have better yields and cash flow for more central Oklahoma farmers.

El Reno defense sets tone in 5A-1 win over Southeast

On a night when discipline on offensive shot selection was a bit loose, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team used its defense to spark a wire-to-wire victory over Southeast.

El Reno logged 20 steals, 12 in the first half, en route to a 71-25 win over the Spartans and a sweep of the season series with Southeast by a combined 101 points. The Indians won the first meeting in December by 55 points.
