El Reno High School’s tennis team had one of its strongest showings of the season last week at the 2026 Elgin Owl Classic.

The boys fielded a full squad for the first time this year and took fifth in the team standings with 12 points, highlighted by its singles players who were both consolation champs.

Sergio Rosas, playing the No.1 bracket, lost to Weatherford’s Carson Bonner (7-5/6-1) but rebounded to defeat Kingfisher’s Wyatt Long (6-0/6-2) and Southeast’s Miguel Garcia (6-0/6-1).

El Reno High School catcher Austin Steffler said it best when describing senior right-hander Jonathan Shelley’s first varsity start of the season.

“Jonathan’s fast ball is moving,” said Steffler.

Shelley, who missed two-thirds of the season with a hamstring injury, pitched five innings of three-hit baseball as the Indians snapped a six-game losing streak with a 9-1 run-rule of Putnam City.

Shelley allowed one run and a walk, while fanning six batters. He retired the first eight batters in order, allowed the free pass, then retired four of the next five batters faced.

It might be hard to believe, but El Reno’s soon to open restaurant, Sonny’s Kitchen and Bar, actually got its start in Washington, D.C.

Expected to open soon at 1515 S. Rock Island, workers are putting the finishing touches on the building, converting it from the VFW Post that hosted all kinds of community events, into a restaurant and bar operated by award-winning chef Andrew Black.

So how does a star in the culinary world find his way to El Reno? Most likely fate and faith, said Black.
