The Power of 100 donates to ICAN

An organization that helps women, men and children escape from domestic violence situations is the latest nonprofit to receive support from The Power of 100 Canadian County.

Last week, Power of 100 representatives presented the Intervention and Crisis Advocacy Network, better known as ICAN, with a check for more than $17,000. The donation was made outside the ICAN headquarters in El Reno.

Savannah Station to hold annual gala

Savannah Station Therapeutic Riding Program will hold its 10th Anniversary Gala Friday night (Aug. 18) at The Palace Event Center, located at 2310 N. Banner Road.

The event will run from 6 to 10 p.m. and tickets are $75 each.

There will be a dinner, silent and live auctions, cash bar, music and testimonials from the special needs riders inside the program.

Some of the auction items include tickets to what could be the final bedlam series football game between Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma.

District 3 commissioner pleased with look of yard construction

A first-year Canadian County elected official is pleased with a new open-air garage constructed at her district yard.

District 3 Commissioner Tracey Rider welcomed the El Reno Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 14 at the recently completed 70-foot by 225-foot heavy equipment building.

Robinson Bros. Construction of El Reno completed the $273,000 structure behind the District 3 shop at 1205 N. Calumet Road. Work began in February.

Oklahoma Historical Society improves digital output with purchase of new scanner

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Historical Society Research Division recently purchased a new microfilm conversion scanner that will work twice as fast as the old scanner and allow more items to be digitized in a shorter amount of time.

The scanner’s primary use is to digitize the OHS microfilm collection, particularly the newspapers. The scanner will create digital files of each newspaper page.

Meat processing plants grow with local consumer demand

As more consumers seek locally-sourced products to connect with the land, many farmers and ranchers are stepping up to meet demand.

The market for direct-to-consumer beef has grown substantially during the past decade, sustaining the need for processing facilities. COVID-19 fueled even more business for processors, and Oklahoma’s regulatory agency took notice.

Expo Center eyes county fair, vendor space, booths filling

Canadian County’s $20 million fairgrounds will soon be hopping with the annual free fair.

This will mark the third year the fair will be presented at the Canadian County Expo and Event Center, 3001 Jensen Road East.

Since opening in July 2021, the Expo and Event Center has remained steadily busy with event bookings.

The 69th Annual Canadian County Fair is set for Aug. 23-26.

Expo Center Director Mandy Davis provided information about the upcoming fair to Canadian County commissioners.

Commissioners won’t fund historic jail restoration

Citing the high cost and better use of taxpayer money, Canadian County commissioners agreed not to allocate funds to refurbish the historic county jail.

After reviewing two proposals from roofing contractors, construction manager Erick Westfahl said a proposed restoration/stabilization project, as recommended by an engineer, would cost $448,292. The preliminary estimate was $550,000 to replace the roof, shore up the structure and restore the exterior, along with sheathing, masonry repairs and sanitation cleanup.
