Lawmen, citizens pay tribute to fallen El Reno Sgt. along route to Kingfisher

More than 40 police agencies took part in a procession honoring Sgt. Thomas Duran.

The veteran El Reno officer died Oct. 24, a week after being injured in a hit-and-run incident that occurred as he was reportedly assisting a pedestrian who had waved him over.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Oct. 17 on Watts near Wilson, police said.

Funeral services for Sgt. Duran, 41, will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Yukon at Together We Church, 620 N. Cemetery Road.

El Reno municipal offices will be closed that day until 1:30 p.m.

The procession began in Oklahoma City and made its way through Canadian County, continuing north to Kingfisher.

Hundreds of people lined the road as the procession made its way through town.

A massive American flag was hoisted by the El Reno Fire Department at Wade and Choctaw as the procession turned north, headed past City Hall and the Canadian County Courthouse.

The incident that would claim Sgt. Duran’s life was captured on the dash cam video of his police cruiser.

The pedestrian, who has not been named, used the injured officer’s police radio to call for help. Sgt. Duran was then taken by air ambulance to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Later that morning, police reportedly located a vehicle believed to have been involved, and after interviewing Logan Primeaux, 25, took him into custody.

Primeaux has been held in custody, pending formal charges.

On Wednesday, El Reno Police Chief Ken Brown said police plan to present new information to the Canadian County district attorney seeking formal charges.
