United Way of Canadian County kicks off annual fundraiser

United Way of Canadian County kicked off its annual campaign in an effort to raise funds that help support 16 area agencies.

The agencies work to provide health and human services to Canadian County residents.

Richard Steanson, 2020 United Way of Canadian County campaign chair, and Jan Foreman, 2020 United Way of Canadian County president, kicked off the campaign by way of video.

Schools in the area kicked off their second full month of classwork, both online and in-person.

New Hope Women’s Union begins 2020-21 sessions

New Hope Women’s Missionary Union met recently at New Hope Church to begin its 2020-21 sessions. Carol Johnson offered opening prayer, while Mary Ellen Jones led the group in the WMU Watchword and Mission Statement.

Members recognized missionary donations and services provided by the group.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the yearly dessert auction has been postponed for a later date.

It was noted that a memorial plaque honoring former members and charter members of New Hope will be presented to the church.

Youth archery shoot Saturday

Archery Traditions of Oklahoma, 328 Elm Ave. in Yukon, is sponsoring a fundraiser for YFS on Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be a raffle table that includes gift cards, gift baskets, a Yeti cooler, gun range time, baked goods, a handmade hunter’s knife and more.

Update: Last year I wrote about the marvelous millipede, but due to an unfortunate experience, I must update my article.

The fact is they are quite poisonous. As I was scouting the woods with my grandson, we spotted one and I wanted to show him how they curl up when touched.

This one did not curl so I picked it up to show Pierce its many legs. My hand immediately burned and I smelled an unusual odor so I dropped it.
