Lamplighters OHCE of Canadian County met recently at a local church. Joan Herr called the meeting to order and offered opening prayer.

Carol Stine led the flag salute, then gave a devotional titled “Word and Deed.”

Thank-you cards were read from Gran Gran’s Assisted Living Love for the Children’s Center, and Intervention and Crisis Advocacy Network for gifts and donations and personal thank you’s from Janice Taylor and Anna Rinehart.

The Underwood Oklahoma Home and Community Education Association of Canadian County met recently in the home of Vicki Duncan, with Natalia Valenzuela calling the meeting to order.

Bernita Davis read minutes of the previous meeting, while Ann Ricketts gave the treasury report.

Members made plans to attend the Spring Council meeting set for May 3 at the Mustang Town Center, featuring a guest speaker from Yukon Manna Pantry.

The group discussed items needed for the county fair as well as the cookie jar entry.

Larry and Debbie Thomas of El Reno will be honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with a celebration on Saturday with family and friends at an Oklahoma City restaurant.

Larry Thomas and Debbie Moore were married April 21, 1972, at First Christian Church.

Larry was employed with Evergreen Mills, Trigg Drilling Co. and Oklahoma Gas and Electric. Debbie was employed with Dunn’s Dairy Queen, Norma Havener Income Tax and Oklahoma Natural Gas. Both are now enjoying retirement.

Hailey McBroom was presented the Daughters of the American Revolution Citizens Award during the April El Reno School Board meeting. Presenting the award is Nicky Howell and Paula Harman.

Hailey will graduate as El Reno High School valedictorian and plans to earn an associate degree in psychology from Redlands Community College before transferring to the University of Oklahoma to major in physics and then attend medical school.

The El Reno Kiwanis Club reported an excellent turnout during its annual Pancake Breakfast at Wesley United Methodist Church, serving around 100 guests from the community.

Most of the funds raised will go toward scholarships to graduating seniors at El Reno High School.

For the first time in three years, Redlands Community College students returned to Catalyst, the international conference for Phi Theta Kappa.

Students from Redlands’ Alpha Beta Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, made the most of the opportunity, competing in various events and celebrating their achievements during the awards ceremony.

Canadian Valley Art Guild recently hosted plein air artist Polly Sharp, who gave a demonstration on plein painting and the equipment that is needed as well as how to reduce the landscape down to various shapes.

With the help of a viewfinder, Sharp is able to find the most dramatic and engaging composition for her paintings.

The Canadian Valley Art Guild meets on the second Thursday of the month beginning at 6:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 400 Elm Street in Yukon. The public is invited to attend. For more information, contact Trina Lee at (918) 688-5503.

Rainwater catchment in the landscape is a great way to help conserve natural resources. There are various ways to capture rainwater, including the traditional rain barrel or installing a rain garden.

Members of the Okarche High School Speech Team brought home the Class 3A fourth-place sweepstakes plaque from the state speech and debate tournament held recently on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.

Okarche was only three points away from second place and one point out of third in a close competition that saw Riverfield Country Day School take first, Cherokee, second, and Haskell, third.

OHS had two students crowned state champions - senior McKenzie Stewart in poetry and freshman Zoe Palmer in prose.
