Housing news puts award-winning plan into focus as ER prepares for growth

It would appear El Reno’s highly acclaimed Route to the Future long-range development plan arrived just in time. The plan, adopted in 2021, lays out a path for community development for the next 20 years.

It projects El Reno growing by 9,000 people during this time period. Some news coming out of last week’s city council meeting might tempt planners to increase that population estimate.

Stewart to run for District 18 Senate seat

In a surprise move, a Canadian County commissioner has decided against running for a fourth term and instead will seek a state legislative seat.

District 3 Canadian County Commissioner Jack Stewart will not file for re-election in April.

Stewart, 72, said he intends to run for the new Oklahoma Senate District 18 in this year’s election cycle. Senate District 18 will officially move from eastern Oklahoma on Nov. 23 after the 2022 elections.

El Reno girls surge by Bluejays, Highlanders with steady rotations

Two-platooning both its guard and post players, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team battled a pair of top 10 teams within a 24-hour period and walked away with impressive wins.

El Reno, ranked second in the state in the West bracket, defeated fourth-ranked Lawton MacArthur 43-33 and then backed it up with a 65-47 decision over ninth-ranked Guthrie. The wins swept the season series with both schools.

The Guthrie victory left El Reno with a 16-3 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the Suburban Conference standings going into the showdown with top-ranked Carl Albert.

The trio were acting behind a makeshift ESPN set as a prop in front of the student section at Jenks Simmons Field House.

The student section has had several dress-up themes over the course of the basketball season for home games and sports a following of more than 100 students at those contests.

Shoo birds don’t bother me

Freshman Carter Roman Nose knocked down a handful of 3-pointers in the first half as El Reno High School’s boys basketball team put up 46 points before intermission and cruised to a 74-53 win over eighth-ranked Guthrie.

El Reno, ranked seventh on the West side of the state, improved to 10-9 on the season and swept the Suburban Conference series over the Bluejays. The Indians are now 5-2 in the league standings.

The win over Guthrie came on the heels of a 74-73 loss to fifth-ranked Lawton MacArthur as the Highlanders got an Arzhonte Dallas basket with 2.2 seconds left.

Okarche speech qualifies for regionals, earns awards

The Okarche High School Speech Team took part in two competitions during January, qualifying 18 events for regionals and garnering two school awards.

Eight OHS students competed in Comanche High School’s invitational tournament and brought home the sweepstakes trophy in Class 3A.
