With the Omicron variant fueling January’s surge in COVID-19 cases both in Canadian County and across Oklahoma, residents received a break in finding those elusive at-home test kits.

The United States Postal Service has begun delivering the first batch of the test kits to Americans who placed an order on the national website COVIDTests.gov.

The use of the at-home method is promising to help take the burden off hospital emergency rooms and doctors offices that have been swamped with residents seeking coronavirus testing.

Winter strikes again

El Reno was hit by its second winter mix of 2022.

The city was covered with several inches of snow as temperatures stayed in the single digits to low teens through Thursday.

Former ER High bandmaster honored with OkMEA Award

Randy Hurst has been awarded the Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OkMEA) President’s Award. The presentation came at a Jan. 20 ceremony that was a part of the OkMEA Winter Conference held at the DoubleTree in downtown Tulsa.

Man arrested for illegal drugs, multi-state ID theft

El Reno police arrested a man after he was found to allegedly be in possession of numerous illegal drugs, several stolen driver’s licenses and credit cards as well as a U.S. passport reported stolen in Ardmore and Marietta as well as in Gainsville and Muenster, Texas. 

Police said Casey Bradbury was found shortly after 2 a.m. on Jan. 17  “passed out” in a Chevrolet pickup parked in front of a closed energy business on SH 66. Police said Bradbury told them he lived in Ardmore.

Redistricting leaves county with new Senate seat

Legislative redistricting has created a new State Senate district that will cover much of Yukon. Oklahoma Senate District 18 will officially move from eastern Oklahoma.

The district’s revised boundaries will include a significant part of the Yukon area and Oklahoma City in eastern Canadian County and Bethany and Woodlawn Park in western Oklahoma County.

Senate District 18 will include most of Yukon city limits, except for south of Interstate 40 and west of Mustang Road.

Prior to the game with Kingfisher, El Reno High School girls basketball coach Jennifer Douglas told her players they needed to win the next four games to assure themselves a home regional.

The Indians are one step away from that goal, using a 23-11 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from No.7 Piedmont for a 49-35 victory – the team’s third in a row.

Teams in the upper classifications statewide are to report win-loss records on Monday to be used for bracketing for the upcoming playoffs.

Schools were separated into the East/West split in late January.

Indians uses small, big lineup to hold off Piedmont for sweep in SC rivalry

Using both its small and large lineups in the second half, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team held off two comeback attempts by No.11 Piedmont to complete the season sweep of the Wildcats.

The Indians scored six of the game’s final eight points to pull away for a 64-52 victory in which the Indians never trailed their cross-county rival.

El Reno, which jumped a spot to No.7 among the 16 teams on the West side of the state, improved to 9-8 on the season with the win. The Indians are now 4-2 in Suburban Conference standings.
