There were many firsts logged into the record books during the El Reno High School girls basketball team’s historic run to the Class 5A state championship.

Now you can add two more superlative honors to that list as head coach Jennifer Douglas was named the District 5A-1 Coach of the Year and senior post player Pauline Black-Harmon was tabbed as the league’s Player of the Year.

In its first tournament of the spring, Redlands Community College’s golf team placed 11th in the 2024 Diffee Ford Invitational held recently at Kickingbird Golf Course in Edmond.

The Cougars completed the 36-hole event on the 5,821-yard, par-72 course with a 666 total (331/335), missing the top 10 by 18 strokes. Northwestern Oklahoma State held that spot with a 648 tally.

The granddaughter of John Wayne visited the Center of Family Love in Okarche last week to help raise awareness of the home. The CFL is a home for individuals who live with intellectual disabilities. It was founded in 1981.

Anita LaCava Swift was greeted by the CFL residents with hugs and smiles. She would later spend the evening helping to raise funds for the CFL as well as the Toby Keith Foundation at the Shamrock Shindig.

The colorful event was held at the Petroleum Club in downtown Oklahoma City.

The Redlands Community College Livestock Judging Team was named the Junior College Intercollegiate Team of the Year.

And RCC Coach Spencer Scotten received the honor of Coach of the Year.

Four team members were recognized as All-Americans.

“The Redlands ag program has a strong tradition of producing competitive, successful livestock judging teams,” said Redlands President Jena Marr.

Former El Reno Mayor Matt White portrayed St. Patrick on Saturday in the annual Stockyards City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

El Reno resident Debbie Harrison serves as director for the Stockyards City Main Street program, the sponsor of the event.

The El Reno Wranglers were also scheduled to participate in the parade.

Motorists traveling Highway 66 between Yukon and El Reno have noticed recent safety improvements in the area. An Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) contractor has made significant progress since early January on a permanent upgrade to the four-way stop at SH-66 and Banner Road.

Canadian County Commissioner Tom Manske provided an update on the project.

“If you haven’t had the chance to drive out there, it looks great,” Manske said.

A Yukon woman has been found guilty on all counts for driving drunk and causing the death of an Elk City teenager while injuring three others.

Cassandra Ann Bray, 42, will be sentenced April 23 by District Judge Paul Hesse after a jury returned guilty verdicts about 7 p.m. March 8 to end a weeklong trial in Canadian County District Court.

After deliberating for two hours and 15 minutes, the jury recommended sentences of 16 years for first-degree manslaughter and five years each on three counts of driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury.

A jury has found a former Yukon schoolteacher guilty in a sexual assault case.

Yukon’s Robert Brian Davis, 45, will be formally sentenced next month by Canadian County Associate District Judge Bob Hughey after a four-day trial last week in Canadian County District Court.

Jury members on March 7 returned guilty verdicts, recommending that Davis serve one year for sexual battery and two years for second-degree rape by instrumentation.

The sentencing hearing is set for 2 p.m. Friday, April 12.
