Bids opened for county D-3 shop

The Canadian County commissioners meeting was filled this week with vendors interested in helping build a new District 3 shop building.

Commissioners opened 22 bids submitted by 18 companies for the project planned at the District 3 yard, 1205 N. Calumet Road. The current District 3 shop was constructed in 1956.

“Thank you for taking the time to bid on this new facility,” District 3 Commissioner Tracey Rider said.

Premium Aerospace Center Oklahoma LLC (PAC) has secured a strategic long-term lease with the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority (OSIDA) to expand into a 130,000-square-foot hangar.

The partnership promises 40 years of aerospace commerce, positioning western Oklahoma at the forefront of the next era in space exploration and establishing key aerospace operations including maintenance, repair and operations (MRO).

Before 1950, producing Oklahoma wheat and peanut crops looked a little different from what it does now. Diseases, pests and yields were much more of a challenge for agricultural producers in the early 1900s, as farmers had few ways of obtaining new varieties with stronger genetics.

“I imagine wheat production would have been a game of ‘whatever you can get your hands on,’” said Brett Carver, Oklahoma State University wheat genetics chair and head wheat breeder.

WASHINGTON — The penny may be losing its shine in Washington, as a bipartisan-backed bill to end its production cleared a key House committee last week, with fiscal hawks and factory workers unexpectedly on the same coin.

Heads or tails, the penny’s days are numbered.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking at the Young Americas Foundation Conservative Student Conference last week, joined the drumbeat, saying he would be “killing” the penny in Philadelphia.

Yukon pulls away late to hand El Reno softball its second road loss to start ’25 season

Yukon outscored El Reno High School’s softball team 8-2 over the final two and a half innings as the Millers broke a 5-all tie and pulled out a 13-7 victory over the Indians.

The loss dropped El Reno to 0-2 on the season following a 9-1 road setback a day earlier to Enid.

El Reno tied the game with the Millers with a five-run effort in the fifth inning. Key hits in the comeback were a two-run double by Kyla Killingsworth and a follow-up two-bagger by Taylor Acosta, which plated a run.

ER spikers drop opener to Pats 3-1

Though the scores improved each game, El Reno High School’s volleyball team found itself on the short end of a 3-1 score against Southwest Covenant School in the 2025 season opener.

El Reno won game three 25-18 and led in game two by a pair of points before falling 25-20. The Patriots took games one and four by scores of 25-10 and 25-16, respectively.

El Reno High School’s football program was slated to jump into full pads on Friday after the mandatory heat acclamation period of four days in shorts and helmets mandated by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.

El Reno will have its lone preseason scrimmage on Friday (Aug. 22) at home with Elk City.
