Okarche hitters go yard, Chieftains, Tigers drop games

Lawson Geheb and Callie Cramer logged a home run each as Okarche High School’s fast-pitch softball team posted season-opening wins over Amber-Pocasset (6-1) and Chattanooga (7-1).

Geheb (.571) logged four base hits total for the two games, including two doubles, as the Warriors went 16-of-49 as a team for a .327 average. Chesney Black and Katie Parham added a double each.

Parham (.429) closed with three base hits, while Black (.400) and Sara Jacobs had two singles each.

Calumet, Union City post wins

CALUMET – Without an extra base hit, Calumet High School’s baseball team kicked off the 2025 fall season with a 7-2 wire-to-wire victory over Drummond.

Calumet, the Class B state runner-up, outhit the Bulldogs 9-3 with Konnor Thiessen and Talon Arnold logging three singles each on seven combined trips to the plate. Kaleb Thiessen added a one-bagger as did Jackson Burns and Wade Reed.

The Chieftains outscored Drummond 4-0 over the final two and a half innings after the Bulldogs closed the gap to 3-2.

Non-structural design changes for courthouse build being reviewed

Proposed non-structural design changes are being reviewed for the third and fourth floors of the new Canadian County Courthouse project. 

Construction will start this fall on a four-story county courthouse at 201 N. Choctaw. The new courthouse is due to open during the third quarter of 2027.

The building’s third and fourth floors will house Canadian County District Court offices and courtrooms. Canadian County government departments will occupy the first and second floors.

NEXUS Animals joins Clear the Shelter project

NEXUS Animals is partnering with animal shelters and others to host a “Clear the Shelter” pet adoption event. 

El Reno Animal Shelter is one of the partnering agencies, according to information provided by NEXUS.

The adoption event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at the NEXUS Equine Center, 6608 S. Manning Road. 

Dogs, cats and horses will be available for adoption. Those wishing to adopt a horse need to bring their own trailer.

U.S. Postal Service mail carrier David Mann takes a quick break from his route along Jensen Street last week to get a glass of lemonade from Zoey Neal.

Zoey was selling drinks and chips as local temperatures reached near triple digits last week.

Mann was her first customer of the day. Zoey made $5 on the sale with a tip from Mann and two glasses of lemonade for the El Reno Tribune.

ACCO Summer Cookoff

Canadian County District 1 placed third out of 15 teams at the Association of County Commissioners of Oklahoma (ACCO) Summer Safety Conference Cookoff in Norman.

Commissioners begin search for new property to be used for parking

With construction starting this fall on a new Canadian County Courthouse, there eventually will be a need for more parking.

As such, commissioners this week authorized chairman Tom Manske to pursue and negotiate an agreement to acquire more property.

Commissioners met in executive session at their Aug. 4 regular meeting to discuss the purchase of real properties for use as parking for the new courthouse.

“The agreement will have to be approved by the Board of County Commissioners at a future date,” Manske said.
