Two Canadian County sheriff’s deputies and a former detention officer have been honored for providing lifesaving efforts over the past year.

Sgt. Austin Albrecht and Deputy Tony Dorman Jr., along with former detention officer Eric Vincent were honored Aug. 19 by the Oklahoma Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association during an awards ceremony.

Albrecht and Dorman were honored for their work in saving the lives of a woman and her daughter after they were overcome by chemical fumes while painting the interior of a home on Nov. 29.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister urged schools to host blood drives for staff and students to help ensure the Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) can meet demand.

Blood drive cancellations are driving supplies to critically low levels. To maintain a strong blood supply, 1,200 donations a day are needed in Oklahoma. With more than 30 percent of total donations in the state collected from donors associated with education groups, school-based drives are critical.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University President Randy Beutler said he will close out a 35-year career in education and public service with retirement effective June 30, 2021. 

Beutler was named the 17th president of SWOSU in February 2010. He will be completing nearly 12 years leading the institution, becoming the third longest-serving president in school history.

“SWOSU is a very special place, and I have been blessed to be part of the incredible Bulldog community,” Beutler said.

Though splitting the first two matches of a three-date home stand, El Reno High School’s volleyball team continues to build on one of its best seasons under head coach Kristen Koehler.

El Reno, ranked fourth in Class 5A, defeated Tecumseh in straight sets by scores of 26-24/25-15/25-9.

The Savages were the No.15 team in Class 4A.

The win came on the heels of a five-set loss to Carl Albert, ranked third in 5A, in which EHS squandered a 2-0 lead.

The split left the Indians with a 14-3 overall record going into the Duncan match.

El Reno High School’s cross country team recently took part in the 2020 Watonga Invitational for the second meet of the season.

In the high school boys division, El Reno was led by Wyatt Mehan posting a 73rd-place finish with a time of 17 minutes and six seconds over the 4,000-meter course – or 2.48 miles.

Matthew Chaffee crossed the finish line with a time of 17:30 to take 87th place, followed by Cole Strong (97th) with a time of 17:56. The fourth runner for the Indians was Justin Anderson (152nd) with a 26:55 effort.

El Reno High School’s softball team had games with Carl Albert and Guthrie canceled by rain last week. The game with the Titans will be made up Sept. 24 in Midwest City.

The Indians still remain a solid hitting team with a combined .366 team batting average. El Reno has logged 136 hits including two triples, 10 home runs and 20 doubles.

Brayden Dennings threw a one-hit shutout as Union City High School’s baseball team won the 2020 Mulhall-Orlando Invitational with a three-game sweep.

The shutout came in a 10-0 decision over Glencoe in the finals, on the heels of victories over Cimarron (15-3) and Shidler (6-1). The Tigers are 8-2 on the season.

Dennings threw four complete innings, allowing the hit and two walks against four strikeouts.
