Lamplighters OHCE of Canadian County met recently at Mount Zion Methodist Church, with Carol Stine calling the meeting to order.

Jan Maddox read a devotional from Psalms for Women.

Maxine Little read minutes from the previous meeting, while Patricia Morrison gave the treasurer’s report.

Stine was recognized as birthday honoree.

A thank-you card was read from the 4-H thanking members for their contributions and support of their activities.

The leader lesson this month was “Not So Spooky Spiders.”

Underwood Oklahoma Home and Community Education met recently in the home of Janan Fletcher. Other members present were Vicki Duncan, Natalia Valenzuela and Bernita Davis.

The group enjoyed a spider-themed lunch to go along with the program titled “Not So Spooky Spiders.” Fletcher gave the devotional, “God and the Spider.”

The program included facts about spiders found in Oklahoma. Only two are considered venomous, the brown recluse or fiddle back and the black widow.

During the Canadian County Free Fair Family Night festivities, Lynda Landrith of Yukon was awarded the 2023 Outstanding Canadian County Citizen Award.

Donna Jung, Canadian County Family Consumer Sciences Educator, presented Landrith with a certificate and the winning cookie jar fair entry, made by Sunshine OHCE of Mustang.

Al Harrell of Mustang was winner of a quilt raffled off by the Canadian County Association for Oklahoma Home and Community Education during the Canadian County Free Fair.

The quilt was made using the blocks from the 2022 Quilt Block Challenge Contest, and was put together and sewn by Serenity Jennings of El Reno and quilted by Macrae Putnam of El Reno.

Approximately $1,000 was raised with proceeds benefiting the Canadian County OHCE High School Scholarship Fund.

The Ice Cream Freeze-Off was a new contest this year at the Canadian County Free Fair.

Named as champion was Marbi Symes with her butter pecan ice cream.

The trophy was sponsored by Ken Carpenter Auction and Realty.

BOY - Melanie Thompson and Dustin Hutchings of El Reno are parents of a boy, Dawson Gene Hutchings, born July 30 at Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City.

He weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

Dawson has three siblings, Camron, Holly and Mackenzie Hutchings.

Maternal grandparents are Robert and Susan Thompson of Azle, Texas. Great-grandmother is Margaret Evans of El Reno.

Paternal grandparents are David and Yuvonne Hutchings of Oklahoma City. Great-grandmother is Carol Meadows of El Reno.

Amanda Higgins and Dwight Pape, both of Skiatook, announce their plans to marry Oct. 7 at Darlington Chapel, El Reno.

Higgins is the daughter of Andy and Tracy Higgins of Yukon. She is a 2015 graduate of Canute High School and a 2019 graduate of Oklahoma State University with a dual bachelor of science degree in Agricultural Economics and Accounting.

She graduated in 2021 from Oklahoma State University with a master of science degree in Agricultural Economics. Higgins is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) employed with AgReserves in Pawhuska.

Mary Stiles received a scholarship from El Reno Public School Foundation to continue her education and become a counselor for El Reno Public Schools.

Charlie Layne Leggett of Oklahoma City will appear in the bright lights of Broadway on Saturday, Sept. 9 as part of the annual National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) Times Square Video presentation. The one-hour video of roughly 500 photographs includes children, teens and adults with Down syndrome from all 50 states. These collective images promote the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome in a very visible way.
