The single largest infrastructure project in El Reno history came to a sudden halt on Dec. 7, 1941.
That was the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
It was also the day construction ended, or was at least interrupted, on what would become known as the Rock Island overpass.
Crews have begun building an alternate route around the more than 70-year-old structure that is scheduled to be torn down and replaced with a modern boulevard.
City Planner Dustin Downey will be the featured speaker at Thursday’s El Reno Now breakfast.
The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Public Safety Center, 2707 Faith Ave., just off SW 27th Street.
El Reno Now is a monthly event hosted by Mayor Matt White and School Superintendent Craig McVay. Breakfast will be available for $10, with proceeds this month going to El Reno Mobile Meals.
