A wrongful death lawsuit stemming from a deadly 2018 crash near El Reno was transferred June 22 to Canadian County.

Kristin Flores, the widow of Bryan Flores, is the plaintiff in a civil suit originally filed Nov. 6, 2020, in Pushmataha County District Court. Defendants are Chance Girten and Lyanna’s Lakeside LLC.

The case stems from a traffic collision that occurred shortly after midnight Nov. 10, 2018, on Cedar Road near S.W. 15th.

Through the Reach Higher program, Redlands Community College is helping students who have some college credit get back in the classroom and on the path to earning an associate degree.

During its Reach Higher: RECONNECT event July 22, the college will hold sessions to help students find out how to pay for college and discover a career that’s right for them. Academic advisers will be available throughout the event to answer questions and help students enroll for the fall semester. Attendees can also take a tour of the campus.

A new Surgical Technology program will open in October as the first of a handful of new educational opportunities following an extensive expansion at Canadian Valley Technology Center’s Cowan Campus, near Yukon.

The $19.6 million project will help the school educate more people for in-demand jobs in various industries across central Oklahoma, said Superintendent Dr. Gayla Lutts.

“The northern portion of our school district in Canadian County has grown more than 28 percent in the last decade,” Lutts said.

OKLAHOMA CITY - State Rep. Monroe Nichols, D-Tulsa, filed an interim study request last week to review neighborhood blight throughout Oklahoma and how it affects homeowners and communities.

Neighborhood blight refers to neighborhoods with abandoned houses or lots often in disrepair. When neighborhoods experience blight, property value decreases for everyone, including small businesses in the area.

The rainy spring season and hot, dry months of summer are ideal times for close inspection of cattle ponds, streams, creeks and spillways. Routine maintenance of these water sources can prevent costly repairs for landowners.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma History Center (OHC) will host a National History Day Boot Camp on Thursday, July 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This workshop will show middle and high school teachers how to bring project-based learning and critical thinking skills into their classrooms through the adaptable curriculum of the National History Day program. 

The workshop is $10 for Oklahoma Historical Society members and $15 for non-members.

El Reno Regional Airport has been a busy place.

Last week the airport welcomed youngsters to what is believed to be the first ever aviation camp. It also played host to an international flight crew that specifically chose to train here because of the airport’s grass runway.

The airport is also serving as a flight training center for military aircraft from bases in Oklahoma and Texas. And, a group from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce visited to see what the airport might offer in terms of job creation.

El Reno had a three-day celebration for the Fourth of July.

The Canadian County History Museum museum hosted an evening of celebration last Friday that included fried-onion hamburgers as well as other food concessions and live music.

Vicki Proctor, museum director, said music events may become more common after about 150 people turned out for the evening.

A day later, the city of El Reno held its annual fireworks display at Lake El Reno. Lucky Star Casino held its fireworks display on July 4.

Rep. Rhonda Baker, R-Yukon, was elected last week as vice chair of the Education Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC).

Baker, a former teacher, currently serves as the chair of the House Common Education Committee.

“What an honor to be elected by my national peers to be vice chair of this important committee,” Baker said.

“Oklahoma has made enormous strides in recent years in funding education and crafting reforms to help improve student outcomes.
