Proposed city budget flat

El Reno’s proposed city budget for the coming fiscal year will be in a word, flat.

City Manager Matt Sandidge will present the proposed Fiscal Year 2021-22 budget to the city council during a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“The future is bright for El Reno with new infrastructure, parks improvements, housing and businesses. However, before we discuss the future, we need to review this past fiscal year,” Sandidge wrote in a letter to members of the city council.

He said the past year has “contained uncertainties, challenges and natural disasters.”

Burger Day limited but filled with fun

It wasn’t your typical Burger Day, but it was outdoors, it had some cornhole and it was fun.

That was the thinking after El Reno celebrated the famous fried onion hamburger after a year hiatus.

Main Street Director Shana Ford said the day went off well with the inaugural cornhole tournament attracting 47 two-person teams. The winning team featured a 14-year-old cornhole whiz in Isabelle Surprenant of Enid and her partner, Mark Bitner.

C&A Tribes to host viewing of historic White Antelope blanket

The blanket of a Cheyenne chief among those killed at the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre will be displayed at the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal Headquarters in Concho.

C&A Gov. Reggie Wassana said the viewing of the blanket of Chief White Antelope will be a somber occasion.

The blanket will be displayed in a ceremony set for 11 a.m. May 11. The initial viewing will coincide with the Sand Creek Massacre Monument Dedication the same day.

The blanket was taken from the body of Chief White Antelope at the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864.

A group of Canadian County women working to protect the stability of families is being recognized.

Ten Canadian County members of Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) attended last week’s Canadian County commissioners meeting to accept a proclamation declaring May 2-8 as “OHCE Week.”

The Tribune erred in reporting a former officer of the El Reno Tag Agency had pleaded no contest to felony charges of embezzlement.

Julie Armold, 51, was handed an eight-year suspended sentence and was ordered to pay approximately $290,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to the charges in Canadian County District Court.

Burger Day is back

El Reno Main Street welcomed back Burger Day after a year’s hiatus due to COVID-19.

While it was a scaled-down version, thousands flocked to downtown El Reno for the event.

City swings focus to all Lake ER activities

After years of trying without success to host a restaurant at Crimson Creek Golf Course, the city of El Reno has ventured in a new direction.

The new Crimson Creek Pro Shop and Outdoor Store will still cater to golfers, but will now offer limited food and beverage service, as well as fun and useful stuff that can be used at Lake El Reno and Adams Park.

El Reno feels the need for speed

Several El Reno middle school students made history last week, becoming the youngest team ever to compete in an aviation competition at Oklahoma State University.

Known as SpeedFest, the program is a “high-speed aircraft design, build and fly competition intended to foster enthusiasm for aviation and STEM in general,” said Roblyer Learning Center instructor Stacey Stevenson.

Redlands to host graduation Friday at Jenks Simmons

After holding a virtual ceremony for 2020 graduates last spring, Redlands Community College is celebrating the Class of 2021 with an in-person ceremony Friday, May 7 at Jenks Simmons Field House.

Nearly 180 students will graduate with degrees.. The Class of 2021 also includes 30 nursing graduates. Since last year’s ceremony was held virtually, graduates from the Class of 2020 were also invited to participate in the 2021 commencement ceremony.
