Yukon woman convicted of hiding meth inside CC jail

A Yukon woman has been convicted of a felony after trying to hide drugs inside the Canadian County Jail.

Melissa Marie Bennett, 37, recently pleaded guilty to bringing contraband into a jail institution.

Bennett was charged in Canadian County District Court with the felony crime after being caught April 23 with methamphetamine at the county’s detention center.

Stitt’s son among four minors caught with alcohol near Guthrie haunted house

John Andrew Stitt, the 20-year-old son of Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, and three other minors caught in possession of alcohol have been sent a letter by the Logan County District Attorney’s Office offering participation in a deferred prosecution program that involves community service, fee payment and potential revocation if terms of the program are not met or if participants violate the law again during the program period.

Operation Deep Freeze

SEATTLE – The Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB 10) and crew departed Seattle last week, and is scheduled to transit to Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze.

Operation Deep Freeze is an annual joint military mission to resupply the United States Antarctic stations in support of the National Science Foundation, the lead agency for the United States Antarctic Program. This marks the 26th year for the Polar Star to render support.

Lights in Legion will shine brighter than ever after more than two dozen new Christmas displays have been added to the holiday attraction. 

The winter wonderland kickoff party starts at 4 p.m. Saturday and will run until 6 p.m. when the switch is turned and the park transforms into a Christmas extravaganza Clark Griswold would envy.  

El Reno Streets and Parks Superintendent Amy Smith said getting ready for the colorful opening has truly been a community effort.

“Lots of City Hall staff pitched in to help get the park decorated,” Smith said.

Former Canadian County Election Board Secretary Wanda Armold was celebrated last week for her nearly four decades of service to area voters.

A retirement party for the former county official gathered about 100 family members, friends, colleagues and officials and featured presentations and fond memories of Armold’s 39 years of service to the county.

Accolades included proclamations from the cities of Yukon, Piedmont and El Reno, including a presentation to the former election board secretary of a key to the city of El Reno.

EHS grad’s book to be made into television movie

Author and EHS graduate with the class of 1957, Patricia (Hoffman) Martin recently signed a contract with Talmarc Productions for the filming of her novel, “A Meadowlark Calling,” in the spring of 2023.

It will be part of a new network of family films made for TV.

The book is the true story of a young orphan girl growing to womanhood amidst the hardships of homesteading on the plains of Kansas and Oklahoma in the late 1800s.

Stewart sworn in as state senator

Sen. Jack Stewart, R-Yukon, was officially sworn into office last week during a ceremony at the Capitol presided over by Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell.

Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard Darby administered the oath of office.

Stewart was joined by his wife, Jan, his family, friends and supporters.         

“I’m honored to have been chosen to serve as the voice for Senate District 18 and continue my public service to the citizens of Canadian County and the state of Oklahoma.
