The city’s investment in drainage in El Reno appeared to pay off last week when the area experienced heavy rains.

The spillway from Legion Park Pond north carried an estimated 3 inches of rainfall Sunday morning in an efficient manner.

City Manager Matt Sandidge said at last week’s city council meeting he was also pleased the city took emergency measures to correct drainage issues on South Country Club. Crews recently completed a major repair of that area.

Voters can download a sample ballot using the State Election Board OK Voter Portal at oklahoma.gov/elections/ovp or pick up a copy at the Canadian County Election Board during normal business hours.

Canadian County Election Board Secretary Allen Arnold reminds voters that sample ballots are specific to each person. 

The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a noticeable spike in calls from citizens concerning a telephone scam they said resurfaces periodically.

The caller tells the person who answered the phone they missed some government function, oftentimes jury duty, or didn’t pay a citation.

A Canadian County contractor could face years in prison for allegedly taking $190,203.79 from customers after agreeing to build them custom homes but failing to complete most of the work.

Yukon’s Kevin Dean Baker, 38, was charged Aug. 5 in Canadian County District Court with two counts of embezzlement and one count of pattern of criminal offenses.

The transient suspected of killing an El Reno man during a multi-state crime spree will face the charge in Sequoyah County, where he also is charged in the deaths of two more people near Gans.

Stacy Lee Drake is suspected of killing an El Reno man in June. 

El Reno Police Chief Ken Brown said Drake, 50, of Birmingham, Ala., is the main suspect in the death of Phillip Emerson, 56, who lived at 204 N. Macomb. That case is filed now in Sequoyah County, authorities reported.

Art Peters has spent 18 years tracking down the history in and around Hinton. That effort helped earn the 1976 El Reno High School graduate a Heartland Regional Emmy for his role in an OETA documentary.

Peters is the curator at the Hinton Historical Museum. He’s been in that position for 21 years.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Not all of Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Todd Hiett’s friends really understand his role in state government.

Hiett said they assume he is a county commissioner, putting down gravel and building county roads.

However, Hiett sits on a three-person board that regulates a range of industries including transportation, oil and gas, towing and public utilities.  

More than 100 students started class last week at Sacred Heart Catholic School.

The school offers education from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.
