ER Airport seeks to land new manager

A new manager is being sought for the El Reno Regional Airport. 

City Manager Matt Sandidge said Baily Kennemer has left the position after serving in that role for the past 2 1/2 years. 

Sandidge did not disclose the reason for the departure. He did say three part-time employees are still in place at the airport.

Sandidge said interviews for a new manager have been scheduled and he is excited about the candidates.

The goal is to have a new manager in place before the Sept. 28 airshow.

Sunset demolition

Body

A demolition crew has taken down a longtime structure at the corner of Sunset and Admire. The property once housed a restaurant and later a used furniture store.

Ross Seed purchased the property from Dwight Kennedy. Julie Ross-Martin said the plan for now is to asphalt the lot.

The city of El Reno has been working to improve the appearance along Sunset Drive, which is Route 66, prior to the Centennial of the historic highway in 2026.

City receives $1.5 million OWRB loan for drainage

The city of El Reno has received a $1.5 million loan from the Oklahoma Water Resources Board to continue making improvements to drainage infrastructure. The loan comes attached with a “100 percent forgiveness” clause.

City Manager Matt Sandidge said the funds will be used to engineer additional drainage projects throughout town. 

The funds will be administered through the El Reno Municipal Authority.

Report says Lucas seeks “forever” resolution on Fort Reno

A national online news organization is reporting Congressman Frank Lucas is pushing legislation that would forever keep Fort Reno in the possession of the federal government. 

The Hill published a story recently that said “the decades-long battle over nearly 9,500 acres in Oklahoma is coming to a head in Washington, D.C.”

Opening night of the fair

The 70th Annual Canadian County Free Fair had a large crowd on hand for opening night.

The Farmhand Olympics drew hundreds of students competing in fun games such as egg and water carrying, sack races, calf roping and wheelbarrow course.

The fair, which runs through Saturday, was the perfect place for a mix of food and fun on the midway.

District 2 voters to pick new commissioner

For the first time in 16 years, voters in Canadian County’s District 2 will be represented by a county commissioner other than Mustang’s Dave Anderson.

It will be District 2 voters casting ballots in the Tuesday, Aug. 27 Republican primary runoff election who will decide who that person will be.

The choice is between two Canadian County employees, Union City’s Lacey Dawson and Mustang’s Josh Davis, who were the top two vote-getters among three candidates in the June 18 GOP primary.
