The national network of agricultural experiment stations at the nation’s land-grant universities, agInnovation, is launching a working 10-Year Research Roadmap.

Hydration is important in the heat of the summer, but it is just as crucial – if not more so – during the winter months. 

Several factors contribute to dehydration in cold weather, including warmer indoor temperatures, cold air and less water consumption.

A dedicated minister, a renowned engineer, a compassionate athlete and a joy-filled opera singer make up the 2024 Class of El Reno High School Distinguished Alumni. 

A banquet honoring the foursome is set for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Canadian Valley Technology Center. 

Tara Dew, Class of 1994; Dallas Curtis, Class of 1996; Lloyd Salsman (posthumously), Class of 1967; and Michael James Crowley (posthumously), Class of 1943 are the recipients of this year’s Distinguished Alumni honor. The award is presented by the El Reno Public Schools Foundation. 

El Reno High School’s cheerleading squad held its annual youth clinic recently where campers learned skills and routines.

Those efforts were showcased to the public before last week’s home game with Guthrie.

There were 120 campers from pre-kindergarten to fourth grade who took part in the clinic.

A new director now leads the staff and programs at the Gary E. Miller Canadian County Children’s Justice Center, 7905 East Highway 66.

Mallory Poplin recently joined the center after a 20-year career with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

Poplin was introduced last week at the meeting of the county commissioners.

“Welcome aboard,” Commissioner Tom Manske said.

“We’re glad to have you on the team.”

Under the light of a Hunter’s Moon, the Heritage Express rolls toward its station after taking riders through a run of the third annual Haunted Trolley.

The event is a fundraiser for the El Reno Arts Council in connection with the Canadian County Historical Society and El Reno High School’s drama department.

County commissioners earlier this week gave final approval of a floodplain permit for Allsup’s Convenience Store at 3156 N. Banner Road. This is the site of the former Shell food plaza and gas station along Banner Road north of I-40.

The Canadian County Floodplain Board had to review the permit request because part of the property is within the floodplain.

Floodplain board members at an Oct. 7 meeting granted an application from BW Gas & Convenience Real Estate, LLC to construct the new convenience store on the property.

Registered voters who become physically incapacitated after 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 and are unable make it to the polls still have an opportunity to cast their ballot. 

Canadian County Election Board Secretary Allen Arnold said state law permits voters who become emergency incapacitated after 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 to vote under special provisions. Arnold said emergency incapacitation is something most voters don’t think about. 

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 for the General Election as well as City of El Reno-Ward 1, City of El Reno-OG&E franchise and City of Yukon Charter Changes elections.
