Tactical maneuver ends high-speed chase

A high-speed chase on I-40 ended when Canadian County sheriff’s deputies were able to bring the vehicle to a stop, using a tactical maneuver. 

Reports from Sheriff Chris West said at approximately 3:44 p.m. Feb. 16, a sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle traveling east on I-40 near Calumet Road.

The driver was allegedly committing multiple traffic violations including following too closely.

Car wash gets green light, fireworks to fly in annexed areas

A new automated car wash is expected to be built on South Country Club and residents in newly annexed areas will be allowed to shoot off fireworks, as well as continue with open burning with some stipulations in place. 

The El Reno City Council took the action at last week’s regular meeting. 

Scott and Rachel Spurger requested 6.11 acres on South Country Club, directly across from Redlands Community College, be rezoned to allow for the car wash and later construction of some office and retail space.

Carpenter retains seat on fair board

A crowd gathered to vote in last Saturday afternoon’s Canadian County District 2 Fair Board election.

Incumbent Ken Carpenter of Mustang defeated challenger Jason Cooper of El Reno, 109-37, to win the next three-year term on the nine-member fair board.

A longtime Canadian County auctioneer and realtor, Carpenter earned his fifth term as a District 2 fair board member with a 74.7 percent majority of votes cast.

Centre Theatre for the Arts to kick off newest show The Red Velvet Cake War

The Centre Theatre for the Arts will perform the delightful Southern comedy, “The Red Velvet Cake War.”

Under the direction of Johnlee Lookingglass, performances are scheduled for Feb. 21, 22 and 28 and March 1 at 7 p.m. Matinee shows are set for Feb. 23 and March 2 at 2 p.m. All performances are inside the historic Centre Theatre in downtown El Reno.

El Reno Acts of Kindness Day was Feb. 19. 

But actually, it should be celebrated every day. 

Kindness is easy but it is not always natural. National Random Acts of Kindness Day (Feb. 17) aimed to help make kindness purposeful for one day, with the hope that the acts of kindness continue.

Board denies clemency for Oklahoma killer

OKLAHOMA CITY – Dreu Kopf wiped back tears as she relived the day she was shot and her friend lay mortally wounded protecting Kopf’s two toddlers in another room.

The Pardon and Parole Board last week voted 4-1 to deny clemency for Wendell A. Grissom. Susan Stava cast a vote for clemency.  

Grissom is set to die March 20 for the Nov. 3, 2005, shooting death of Amber Dawn Matthews, 23, during a break-in at an isolated home near Watonga.

RCC Career Fair moved due to weather

Redlands Community College’s College and Career Fair has been moved to Feb. 26 after the original date collided with below freezing temperatures. 

Originally scheduled for Feb. 12, RCC's College and Career Fair has been moved to Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Redlands Austin Family Conference Center.

Open to both students and the general public, this event is designed to help students explore their future academic and career pathways.
