Iconic B’s team up to help raise funds for Okarche’s CFL

Legendary Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer and Hall of Fame sports columnist Berry Tramel teamed up last week to help raise funds for the Center of Family Love in Okarche. 

An evening with Barry and Berry was held at the Cattlemen’s Steakhouse Event Center in Oklahoma City. Joe Prichard of Pete’s Place in Krebs and Ryan Eaton of El Reno provided a dinner menu that featured the Italian dishes Pete’s Place is famous for, as well as El Reno’s signature staple fried onion hamburgers.

Hesse removes name from Supreme Court consideration over residency

Canadian County District Judge Paul Hesse has ended potential consideration by Gov. Kevin Stitt to be appointed as an Oklahoma Supreme Court justice.

Hesse filed an application to fill the vacated seat previously held by Yvonne Kauger, who retired shortly after Oklahoma voters declined to retain her in the Nov. 5 election.

Hesse withdrew his application on Wednesday, Jan. 29 because of a residency requirement and recent redistricting in Oklahoma for members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Arnold offers tips to make Feb. 11 voting day easier

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11 for the Banner Schools, Cashion Schools, Deer Creek Schools, Union City Schools and City of Oklahoma City-Ward 3 elections.

Canadian County Election Board Secretary Allen Arnold offers these tips to voters —especially those who will be casting a ballot for the first time.

Mark your ballot using the example posted at your polling place and inside your ballot booth. If you make a mistake, do not try to correct it. Instead, take your ballot to the precinct officials. They will destroy the ballot and issue a new one.

Pool builder charged on three felony counts

The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office is accusing a swimming pool contractor of violating the Consumer Protection Act in eastern Canadian County as part of a three-county investigation.

Edmond’s Clendon Ross Cannon, 47, was charged Jan. 14 in Canadian County District Court with three felony counts of violation of the Consumer Protection Act and pattern of criminal offenses.

It starts out when a boy asked a girl out for a Coke date back in 1975. That boy was Larry Nance and that girl was Karen King.

Fifty years later they were kind enough to share their story with me.

Filing opens Monday for Calumet, Okarche, Union City

Candidates interested in filing for municipal office in the town of Calumet, town of Okarche or town of Union City in Canadian County municipalities will file Declarations of Candidacy beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3.

Those who wish to file for a municipal office must submit a Declaration of Candidacy to the Canadian County Election Board on Feb. 3, 4 or 5 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Seven bids opened for face-lift project on old DHS building

Proposals from seven contractors are being reviewed as Canadian County takes the next step in development of a new courthouse campus.

Commissioners have budgeted $500,000 for a remodeling project at the former Department of Human Services building, 314 W. Rogers. That amount includes moving costs.

During construction of a four-story courthouse building at 201 N. Choctaw, the County Treasurer, County Clerk, Human Resources and Emergency Management departments will relocate to the old DHS building.

With Feb. 14 fast approaching, second-graders at one Canadian County private school are collecting valentines from across the country – and even around the world.

El Reno’s Sarajane Black is the second-grade teacher at Canadian Valley Christian Academy inside the South Yukon Church of Christ.

Students in her class recently embarked on an ambitious project to get Valentine’s Day cards from all 50 U.S. states and other countries.

Deputies seize fentanyl

A routine traffic stop on I-40 conducted by Canadian County sheriff's deputies led to the seizure of 36 kilograms of fentanyl. The incident occurred on Jan. 26. 

Sheriff Chris West said at approximately 6 p.m., a deputy observed a semi-truck failing to maintain a single lane while traveling eastbound on I-40 near Mile Marker 121. A traffic stop was initiated, and upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy noted a suspicious load - a Ford F150 truck on the top row of the car hauler, surrounded by high-end luxury cars.
