EDMOND – For the second straight year, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team was bumped from the postseason with a loss to sixth-seeded Ardmore.
The Tigers outscored El Reno, the seventh seed, 12-3 in overtime en route to a 77-68 victory in the Class 5A West, Area 1 consolation semifinals.
The loss ended the Indians season with a 14-12 mark.
OKLAHOMA CITY – The showdown between the top two teams turned into a runaway for No.1 Hydro-Eakly as the Bobcats defeated Okarche 63-41 in the semifinals of the Class A Girls State Championships.
Okarche’s season ends with a 26-4 record after the Warriors were held to single-digit scoring over the first two periods and trailed 38-13 at the break.
In a repeat of its semifinal win, Okarche’s offense came alive in the second half to outscore the Bobcats 29-25 to close the game shooting 58 percent (10-of-17) from 2-point range.
El Reno High Schoolvs baseball team kicked off its home schedule last week by sweeping Oklahoma Christian Academy to move to 3-0 on the spring season.
The Indians won the first game of the doubleheader 6-4 before taking the nightcap by a 10-9 margin, featuring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Trailing 9-7 going into the bottom of the eighth, Brayden Fulton doubled in Davin Shamblin (double) before scoring himself along with pinch runner Daylan Pruitt off a single by freshman Hernan Blanco.
With seventh-ranked Piedmont determined to limit El Reno High School’s guard play in the Class 5A Girls West Region 4 Championship, the Indians were forced to look elsewhere for points in the clutch.
And head coach Jennifer Douglas knew just where to look – in the paint.
Sisters Pauline and Janae Black-Harmon combined for eight of the team’s 14 points in the fourth period of El Reno’s 50-41 win over the Wildcats. The victory secured the Indians their fourth regional title since 2017 and the second in a row.
A third-period scoring drought proved costly for El Reno High School’s boys basketball team in a rematch with Suburban Conference rival Carl Albert in the Class 5A West Region 4 Championship.
The Indians went the final 3:43 of the third period without a point to spearhead the second-seeded Titans 49-30 revenge win over El Reno.
The loss was the first of the postseason for seventh-seeded El Reno, which slipped to 14-11 on the year. The Indians now advance to the Class 5A West Area I consolation semifinals needing back-to-back wins to earn a trip to state.
After jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, El Reno High School’s baseball team uncorked a six-run fifth inning to help secure an 11-1 road win over Rush Springs in the 2022 spring opener.
El Reno never trailed, scoring four runs in the first inning and one in the second.
Rush Springs’ lone run came in the bottom of the third.
Gabe Compton started on the hill for the Indians and got the win, allowing the one run off three hits over 3 2/3 innings.
The right-hander struck out six and walked two batters.
Scoring on all of its on-goal chances, El Reno High School’s girls soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 4-0 road win over U.S. Grant.
The Indians and Generals were tied 4-all in total shots, but El Reno was able to capitalize on its attempts. Meanwhile, U.S. Grant was stymied on all its shots with saves by EHS keeper Kinley Golden.
El Reno led 2-0 at the half as Bri Vickers scored twice off assists from Joey Lierle and Ruby Vazquez. The Indians added two more in the final 40 minutes, both unassisted by senior Caroline Huber.
El Reno High School’s boys soccer team kicked off the 2022 season on a somber note, dropping a 6-0 road decision to U.S. Grant.
The Indians were outshot 20-7 by the Generals, who held a 16-4 edge in shots on goal. El Reno had two players share time in net, with Angel Gonzalez allowing four goals and recording seven saves. Eduardo Alvarez allowed two goals and had three saves.
El Reno’s offense was led by Edgar Garcia and Angel Martinez with two shots each. Anthony DePaz, Jamie Lopez and John Standingwater added a shot each.
Oceanna Schranz logged seven strikeouts as Union City High School’s slow-pitch softball team opened up the 2022 season with an 8-0 shutout of the Dover Longhorns.
The right-hander threw five complete innings, allowing three base hits and three walks. The Tigers defense aided the shutout with five infield put-outs as Dover did not advance a runner past second base.
Both Redlands Community College basketball teams advanced into the NJCAA Region 2 Championship after splitting recent regular-season finales against Northern Oklahoma College of Tonkawa.
The Redlands women were the fifth seed for the tournament following a 79-57 win over the Mavericks to close the regular-season conference race with a 7-9 record. The Cougars took a 13-11 record into the postseason.
