Thinclads open year at Bethany

El Reno High School’s track team opened up the 2022 season at the 59th Annual Ed Forester Bethany Invitational, competing in the running events only.

The girls were paced by Maria Moreno’s eighth-place effort in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.21 seconds. Justine Johnson was 26th in the same event with a time of 31.28 seconds.

The pair also ran the 100-meter dash, with Moreno taking 15th at 14.21 seconds. Johnson (14.68) was 27th and teammate Madeline Taylor (16.17) was 44th.

Tigers streak snapped; Chieftains seek victory

Union City High School’s slow-pitch softball team, ranked No.19 in Class 2A, had its three-game win streak snapped last week with an 11-9 loss to state-ranked Amber-Pocasset.

The two-run loss to the Panthers came on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. Union City tied the game at 9-all with a three-run homer by Kaitlyn Linson in the top half of the frame.

Union City slipped to 14-8 on the season.

Cook named new El Reno grid coach

The recent state powerlifting meet proved to be more than just an economic windfall for both El Reno High School’s football program and the community. It helped secure the program’s next head football coach.

“I have been involved with the state powerlifting for years and El Reno has been a place on our radar as a city and a school we liked to raise our kids,” said Russell Cook.

Calumet High School’s baseball team jumped back into the win column last week with a 16-0 shutout of Lomega.

The Chieftains improved to 6-2 on the year with the shutout and 3-1 in road games this spring.

The Warriors fielded a hard-hit ball off the bat of Braydon Armstrong with outs in the bottom of the seventh and the bases loaded to secure the three-run road win over Union City High School’s baseball team.

Redlands battling long losing streak

An 11-game losing steak has sent Redlands Community College’s baseball team to the bottom of the NJCAA Region 2, Division 2 standings with a 13-21 overall record.

The Cougars are 2-10 in the divisional standings after dropping a four-game set to second-place Western Oklahoma State College by scores of 8-0, 11-1, 12-4 and 9-7.

Redlands went 32-of-116 from the plate in the four-game set for a .276 batting average but scored just 12 runs. The team had eight extra base hits including a triple by Reece Burke and home runs from Nico Kuplik and Colton Clinesmith.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Joey Lierle outran Woodward’s goalie to a free kick by Carlie Golden to score the winning goal as El Reno High School’s girls soccer team beat the Boomers 1-0 in the championship game of the 2022 Northwest Classen Invitational.

Golden, who was credited with the assist, took the kick from the center line and sent it over a cluster of players at the 25-yard line.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Scoring just two goals in the 2022 Northwest Classen Invitational, El Reno High School’s boys soccer team finds itself battling a three-game losing skid heading back into district play.

El Reno slipped to 1-4 on the season after losing to the host team 10-0, before falling to Choctaw (1-0) and Yukon (3-2).

The goals in the loss to the Millers were posted by Angel Martinez and Edgar Perez.

Indians win two of four classic bids

After a quick start in the 2022 Washita Valley Classic, El Reno High School’s baseball team suffered back-to-back losses against a pair of small-school powerhouses to finish the event with a .500 record.

El Reno defeated Dibble (9-1) and Guymon (10-2) before falling 3-2 to Class B’s second-ranked Fort Cobb-Broxton 3-2. The other loss was an 8-2 setback to Comanche, the Indians second of the season to the Class 3A program.

The 2-2 mark left El Reno with an 8-5 season record.

Etta Dale Junior High’s baseball team won the Bethany Invitational over the weekend, winning the championship game by a 10-0 score behind a no-hitter from pitcher Deacon Tillery.

Tennis teams suffer rough opening day

El Reno High School’s tennis teams kicked off the 2022 season with a home duel loss to Harding Prep, winning just one of seven matches.

The No.3 doubles team of Melanna and Allynda Idell, twin sisters, scored a 7-5/0-6/6-3 win over the Harding pair of Lyla Oubre and Evelyn Stirling. El Reno’s girls team went 1-4 in the duel.

Kambry Maifield and Mary Almanza, playing No.1 doubles, fell 6-1/6-0 to the Harding team of Tracy Nguyen and Lily Boevers. El Reno’s No.2 doubles team of Zoey Johnson and Alyssa Weston fell to Piper Sehraman and Tory Nguyen by scores of 6-4/6-2.
