Harriers open with strong times

Fueled by a top 20 finish by Cole Strong, El Reno High School’s cross country team kicked off the 2021 season at the Sand Plum Invitational hosted by Weatherford.

The El Reno boys placed fifth out of 10 teams with an overall score of 145, edging out Kingfisher (147) by two points and Carnegie (150) by five. Team scores come from the point value attached to the finish of the top five runners from each school. The lowest score wins the meet.

Union City posts wins; CHS girls battle slide

Body

An eight-run second inning ignited a 14-2 home win over Verden last week as Union City High School’s softball team found its way back into the win column.

The Tigers improved to 6-5 on the season with the Verden victory and a 14-1 decision over Oklahoma Christian Academy.

The wins snapped a three-game losing streak for Union City which included losses to Luther (8-1) and Jones (4-3) in the Cashion tourney.

Long weekend of work

El Reno, ranked 10th in Class 5A and 6-1 on the year, was slated to play at No.3 Carl Albert on Thursday, before entering the Community Christian School tourney over the weekend.

Calumet, UC baseball drop games

Body

Calumet High School’s baseball team was held to a single win in three recent outings, dropping the Chieftains to 3-4 on the fall season.

Tyler Tignor’s team defeated Lomega 10-1 before suffering losses to Class A’s No.17 Arapaho-Butler (10-0) and Drummond (11-2).

Calumet hit .328 (18-of-61) over the three games but had just two extra base hits, a two-run homer by Jaxon Olive and a double by Caleb Meschberger.

Olive went 4-of-9 (.444) for the set and drove in four runs.
