Area cagers win six district titles

Area basketball teams emerged from the first round of postseason action unscathed, claiming six district titles in the process and each now needing three straight wins to make state.

Calumet High School’s boys team defeated Ringwood (88-25) to move to 23-3 on the year and claimed the Class B1, Area I, District 5 Championship.

Kingston Arnold led the effort with 22 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Hunter Mayfield followed with 13 points and four boards, while Konnor Thiessen had 12 points and five boards. Brendon Voss added 11 points and four caroms.

City boosts Burger Day funds, gives Temple time

The 38th Annual Burger Day will get a boost from the City of El Reno and the owner of an historic building in the downtown that’s in need of repair will get a few more months to continue showing progress.

City council members voted to boost funding for the Burger Day event from the $10,000 last year to $15,000 for this year’s festival set for May 2.

Casey Trejo, board president of the newly-formed Historic Downtown El Reno Foundation, requested the boost in city support. The foundation replaces the former Main Street program and is a nonprofit entity.

Buc-ee’s coming to county?

It’s been a social media tale for years, but if a report by an Oklahoma City media outlet is true, Buc-ee’s may actually arrive in Canadian County.

OKCTalk reported Thursday that the Texas-based company is in preliminary talks with Oklahoma City and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to open a store at I-40 and Cimarron Road. The proposed area, the story said, is just north of Clarence E. Page Airport and in the Oklahoma City limits.
