Special egg hunts

With the help of El Reno VFW Post 382, the Easter bunny held a series of egg hunts throughout El Reno Public Schools sites for students with special needs.

More than 4,000 eggs were hidden at the schools.

VFW Post 382 is the only post in the nation that provides an Easter egg hunt for special needs students.

Drainage work near Legion Park enters final stage

Body

Construction on the last leg of a major drainage project has been under way for several weeks just north of Legion Park.

The city of El Reno tapped into Community Development Block Grants, FEMA funds and local monies to help fund a series of drainage projects that city officials said have been long past due.

The project in the Legion Park area is the final phase of work that started more than a year ago.

Drainage work was completed on the channel that runs north of Watts and extends past Sunset.

Wesley United Methodist Church will hold a “Historical Site Designation” dedication event Sunday, April 24, following its second morning service, said Pastor Allen Carson.

“There are only about a dozen or so churches in Oklahoma that have this designation. With the mergers of several churches over the years, we have a rich history and our current building is close to 100 years old,” said Carson.

The dedication event will start around noon and lunch will be catered by Primo’s.

State marshal investigates Rod and Gun blaze

The state fire marshal is apparently investigating a fire at a cabin at the Rod and Gun Club, just off Britton Road and east of U.S. 81 after local fire officials said they were unable to determine the cause.

El Reno firefighters were called to the scene after a cottage at the private lake caught fire. Firemen reported finding the small cabin as well as a storage shed on fire.

The state fire marshal was contacted by the out-of-town owner of the cabin with concerns and it was decided that agency should be asked to investigate to try and determine the cause of the fire.

Two races form for Canadian County commissioner seats

There will be races for two Canadian County commission seats, but a new county treasurer is expected to be seated and the current assessor will keep his position after they were the only ones to file as candidates.

All candidates filing last week are members of the Republican party.

Incumbent Marc Hader, 58, of Yukon will face Tom Manske, 54, also of Yukon, for the District 1 commissioner job.

The District 3 commissioner race will feature Tracey Rider, 60, of El Reno against Robert Merrick, 38, of Yukon.

Young boys hurt in ATV accident

Body

Two young boys were seriously injured when the 8-year-old driver of an ATV failed to stop at an intersection and their vehicle collided with another vehicle, El Reno police said.

Major Kirk Dickerson said police were called just after 6:30 p.m. April 8 to the area of East Watts and South Mitchell after callers reported the accident.

Officers reported the two juveniles, one 8 years old and the other 6 years old, were on the ATV going south on South Mitchell.
