New terminal build may break ground late April

The El Reno Regional Airport is going to be a busy place with two major construction projects going on at the same time. 

Construction has already begun on the Tony Caldwell Collection, a museum dedicated to antique aircraft. And if all goes to plan, ground will be broken for a new terminal in late April. 

City Manager Matt Sandidge said the groundbreaking is tentatively set for April 24. The city is working to bring a couple of state transportation officials to the ceremony so schedules are being checked.

Justice Center hosting Family Fun Festival

Body

The Canadian County Children’s Justice Center will host a community fun day in celebration of its 25th anniversary. 

Associate District Judge Bob Hughey said the event is being billed as a Family Fun Festival. It’s free and will include live animals, inflatables, face painting, music, activities and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Book Bus. 

The Safe Kids Coalition will be on-site providing car seat safety checks and offering a limited number of free car seats to those who qualify.

RCC academic teams compete in Chicago

The Redlands Academic Team sent two squads to the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) 2025 Community College Championship Tournament in Chicago. The A team secured sixth place finish among the nation’s top 24 community college teams in this prestigious two-day competition.

Two team members from Redlands A squad earned All-Star honors for their exceptional individual performances.

Through the efforts of the El Reno High School Quarterback Club, the city took center stage for the seventh straight year as host of the Oklahoma Powerlifting Coaches Association State Meet.

“We will host this as long as they (OPCA) allow us. It’s getting better and better each year and our kids work hard at hosting it,” said El Reno head football coach Russell Cook.

For three days Jenks Simmons Field House and annex were the home to 1,300 lifters representing 147 schools. Competitors in grades seventh through 12th lifted in 11 different weight classes.

Created by Nik Coleman of Coleman Television and produced by CFL Executive Director Debbie Espinosa and former CFL official Nellie Sanders, the documentary is scheduled to make its Oklahoma premiere April 15 in Oklahoma City.

Blessing Baskets outreach growing in wake of rising grocery prices

The Blessing Baskets Families with Children Grocery Program is a shining example of community support, having made a tangible difference for over 175 families during the recent spring break distribution. 

As Blessing Baskets prepares for monthly grocery distributions during the summer, organizers are anticipating an increase in participation. 

“With the rising cost of groceries for families, we see more families in need of help,” said Donna Dyer, Blessing Baskets Director of Community Relations.

Arrest warrant issued in fatal deaths on I-40

An arrest warrant has been issued for a semi-truck driver accused of causing the death of three people in a multi-vehicle traffic collision last fall on Interstate 40 in eastern Canadian County.

Peter Catto, 65, of British Columbia, was charged March 14 in Canadian County District Court with three counts of negligent homicide by motor vehicle.
