CALUMET - A 47-year-old Calumet woman suffered burns on 30 percent of her body after a water heater in her home north of the town exploded.
Canadian County Sheriff Chris West identified the woman as Leann Schiffman, but said that the investigation was conducted by the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s Office out of Oklahoma City.
“We responded and held the scene until the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s Office arrived,” said West.
The home, located at 12605 192nd Northwest according to preliminary reports from the marshal's office, was deemed a total loss.

February was a good month for El Reno sales tax collections, as the city easily surpassed revenues posted in January and February 2022.

Oklahoma Tax Commission’s February records indicated the city of El Reno collected $1.16 million during the current reporting period. That compared to the $948,824 posted by the city in February 2022 and January’s tally of $935,963.
Most Canadian County’s municipalities this month also saw increases, when compared to February 2022, with two exceptions.
A new Canadian County elected official is updating her district shop with more equipment.
Over the past few weeks, commissioners have awarded contracts for a detachable lowboy trailer and a generator in District 3.
First-year District 3 Commissioner Tracey Rider recommended both purchases.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Legislation intended to help prevent fentanyl overdose deaths passed the House Alcohol, Tobacco and Controlled Substances committee unanimously.
House Bill 1987, authored by Minority Whip Rep. Mickey Dollens, D-Oklahoma City, would allow Oklahomans to carry fentanyl test strips legally without the strips being considered drug paraphernalia.
“Fentanyl testing strips are an easy, smart way to give people at risk of fentanyl exposure more information to help keep them safe,” Dollens said.

While the Cheyenne and Arapaho languages are respectively known as endangered, there is a growing desire among those involved in the Cheyenne and Arapaho language program to teach and pass on the knowledge they’ve gained from the few fluent speakers left within the tribes.
With the Arapaho language, also known as an Algonquian language, spoken by less than 1,000 people, most of whom are located in Wyoming, many of the language speakers are over the age of 60.
An Etta Dale Junior High student is recovering from injuries suffered after being struck by a vehicle shortly after classes had been released on Feb. 15.
El Reno Police Chief Ken Brown said his department was notified at 3:45 p.m. and responded to Cooney Street and Bickford Avenue – which is the road between the school and the district’s Media Arts Center, according to school officials.
Brown said a 13-year-old was struck by a vehicle driven by a male in his mid-50s.
Okarche’s Center of Family Love received a boost last week, when Power of 100 Canadian County selected it for a $10,000 donation and its latest HOPE Award.
That donation was made possible through a nomination of the CFL by Power of 100 member Dicki Parks.
CFL was one of 11 nonprofits initially nominated for the distribution, then whittled down to three finalists, which also included Russell-Murray Hospice and Blessing Baskets, both located in El Reno.
