Lamplighters gather at church

Lamplighters Oklahoma Home and Community Education Association of Canadian County met recently at a local church with Joan Herr calling the meeting to order and leading the group in prayer.

Janice Taylor led the flag salute, with Carol Stine presenting a devotional titled “Sacred Ground.”

Maxine Little read minutes of the previous meeting, while Patricia Morrison gave the treasury report.

Herr was congratulated for being named as one of the 2021 Outstanding Citizens of Canadian County.

Underwood HCE holds monthly meeting

Underwood Oklahoma Home and Community Education Association of Canadian County met recently in the home of Vicki Duncan, with Natalia Valenzuela calling the meeting to order.

Bernita Davis read minutes of the last meeting, with Ann Ricketts giving the treasury report.

Those present filled out new membership forms and paid yearly dues.

Duncan presented the lesson on “Attracting Pollinators to Your Butterfly Garden.”

The group enjoyed Duncan’s grand prize winning apple pie as refreshments following the meeting.

El Reno student makes SWOSU Esports team

Body

New members of the Rocket League and Call of Duty Esports teams at Southwestern Oklahoma State University have been announced, and upcoming tryouts for League of Legends and Overwatch will be taking place on the Weatherford campus.

SWOSU Esports will conduct the tryouts for League of Legends on Saturday, Oct. 2, and Overwatch on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the university’s new Esports arena in the Wellness Center.

Baking winners at county fair named

County residents showed off their talents during the Canadian County Free Fair held Aug. 23-28 at the new Expo and Event Center.

Open class exhibits included baked goods, home canning, crafts, quilts, needlework, sewn items, photography, art, flowers, crops, horticulture, Oklahoma Home and Community exhibits and 4-H exhibits.

Individuals of all age groups participated for cash prizes and ribbons. Areas specifically for young children through senior citizens were available, and there were some special contests available to enter as well.

OHCE names quilt raffle winners

The Canadian County Association for Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) raffled off two quilts at the Canadian County Fair.

The winners were Patsy Shropshire of El Reno and Cora Hart of Yukon.

The quilts were made using the blocks from the 2019 Quilt Block Challenge Contest.

They were sewn by Carol Garrett of Mustang and quilted by Judy Dry of Yukon.

Approximately $600 was raised and all proceeds benefit the Canadian County OHCE High School Scholarship Fund.

Cora Hart was the winner of a second quilt raffled off by OHCE

Winners picked in Quilt Block Challenge

A Quilt Block Challenge was featured at the 2021 Canadian County Fair.

The contest was sponsored by Canadian County Oklahoma Home and Community Education and the winners were determined by viewers choice voting. Proceeds from the purchase of the designated fabric benefits the Canadian County OHCE High School Scholarship Fund.

The winners were Andrea Reed, first place; Patsy Shropshire, second place; Pamela Bretz, third place; Vonnie Meritt, fourth place; and Marcia Ellison, fifth place.
