Okarche High Speech Team places third at state

Members of the Okarche High School Speech Team brought home the Class 3A fourth-place sweepstakes plaque from the state speech and debate tournament held recently on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.

Okarche was only three points away from second place and one point out of third in a close competition that saw Riverfield Country Day School take first, Cherokee, second, and Haskell, third.

OHS had two students crowned state champions - senior McKenzie Stewart in poetry and freshman Zoe Palmer in prose.

ER Wranglers hold meeting

The El Reno Wranglers met recently for their monthly meeting, with Trish Duncan leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Gary Sorrells offering opening prayer.

The club discussed the upcoming Mustache Bash, a bull-riding event that will take place May 28 and 29 at the Denny-Crump Rodeo Arena. Members also discussed the upcoming annual rodeo set for Aug. 26 and 27.

The club is looking for donations and sponsors for both events.

Next scheduled Wranglers meeting is set for May 5.

Four Redlands Community College students were recently honored at the state Capitol by the Oklahoma Association of Community Colleges for their outstanding academic
achievement, record in the classroom and leadership ability.

Quilt of Valor

Body

World War II veteran Gideon Tinsley was presented with a Quilt of Valor on his 95th birthday. Tinsley served as a Seaman Second Class in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Duleuth Battleship.

Piedmont Area Quilt of Valor Quilters made the quilt. The quilt was pieced and quilted by Carol Stine.

Making the presentation was Laura Sylvestor, Carol Stine, VFW Post 382 Auxiliary president Nancy Salsman and Auxiliary secretary/ treasurer Amy Stout.

State Superintendent award winners

Two Okarche High School seniors are among this year’s recipients of the State Superintendent’s Award for Arts Excellence.

Given each year to high school juniors and seniors who have achieved artistic and academic excellence in the fields of music, drama, dance and visual media, students selected are chosen by a panel of university arts educators based on their applications and letters of recommendation.

Emily Neuenschwander and McKenzie Stewart are two of the 23 student-artists chosen in the field of theater.

CV Art Guild

Canadian Valley Art Guild will host award-winning impressionistic landscape plein air artist Polly Sharp during a demonstration set for April 12 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Yukon.

Several of her pieces of work have won awards at the Canterbury Arts Festival, Edmond Art Association, Oklahoma Watercolor, Oklahoma Art Guild, Bartlesville Art Association, Grove Brush & Palette, Art on Main in Jenks and Oklahoma Artists Invitational.

The event is open to the public.
