CFL to host online birthday celebration

OKARCHE – A resident of the Center of Family Love will serve as host for the 40th anniversary birthday celebration, an online event designed to raise funds and showcase the home for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Opened in 1981 by members of the Knights of Columbus, the CFL is home to more than 100 individuals who live with various disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, muscular dystrophy, developmental delays, traumatic brain injuries, neurological disabilities, geriatric needs and more.

Tippens stepping down as Deer Creek superintendent

Longtime educator Ranet Tippens has announced her retirement as superintendent of Deer Creek Schools after serving in that position for eight years.

School board members approved a contract in a special meeting Monday, May 25 with the Oklahoma State School Boards Association to conduct a search for Tippens’ successor.

Tippens, who had been El Reno Schools superintendent for six years prior to moving to Deer Creek, also served as a principal and teacher in El Reno during her career.

Devon grant to help sheriff's office combat oil field theft

The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office will use a gift to help combat thefts of oil field equipment and other items using an online tool.

Canadian County commissioners last week approved a resolution allowing the sheriff’s office to accept a $5,500 donation from Devon Energy Corporation.

The funds will be used by the LeadsOnline investigation program, a technology service helping law enforcement catch criminals while helping businesses reduce the hassles of reporting.

El Reno trio kicks up District 5A-1 honors

The late-season push that catapulted El Reno High School’s boys soccer team into the Class 5A playoffs helped land postseason honors for three of its players.

Edgar Garcia, Angel Martinez and Collin Vickers were all voted to the first team on the 2021 District 5A-1 Boys All-District squad.

ER, Union City plan Memorial Day events

Memorial Day ceremonies are planned in El Reno and Union City as the nation pauses to remember those who gave their lives to preserve freedom.

Mike Booher, commander of American Legion Post 34, said in El Reno the ceremony on Monday, May 31 will be at 11 a.m.

Prior to the ceremony, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as well as volunteers will place small American flags on the graves of those who served in the U.S. military.

Representatives from the American Legion will join with members of VFW Post 382 to place large flags at the cemetery.

Tech upgrade

In an effort to streamline communications with the central office, the El Reno Public Schools Board of Education voted to begin using the Thrillshare/Apptegy program to exchange information.

“It’s streamlining communication between board members and this office for informational purposes. Every time I need to give them a heads up on information items, it’s one button versus sending a text or an email to each one individually,” said El Reno Superintendent Craig McVay.

ASTW starts with cruise along city’s original Route 66

A Small Town Weekend will take a new, but old route Friday evening when the three-day festival put on by the El Reno Cruisers kicks off.

The opening Friday cruise will follow the original Route 66 that snaked through El Reno prior to the opening of the Rock Island overpass in 1947.

The original Route 66 in 1926 entered El Reno from the east and turned north on what is now Shepard. It then turned west onto Elm before going north on Hoff and then west on Wade before turning north on Choctaw and then west on what was Russell and is now Sunset.
