Devon Energy Corp. is celebrating its golden anniversary this month after 50 years in the oil and gas industry.
Founded by John and Larry Nichols in 1971, the company started with no assets and five employees, but by 1988, was publicly traded and then listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Devon continued to grow organically and by acquisition over the years and eventually settled into its place on the S&P 500.
Today it is a leading producer of oil and gas in the U.S.

Tom and Bunny Mathews are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married June 8, 1961, at El Reno First Christian Church.
Tom was employed with the Bureau of Prisons and the couple moved around the United States with his job. They have lived in Texarkana, Texas, Washington, D.C., Seagoville, Texas, Philadelphia, Pa., and Dallas, Texas.
The couple returned to El Reno where Tom retired. Bunny worked with juveniles at the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs.
The University of Central Oklahoma’s College of Fine Arts and Design recently awarded more than 130 scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year.
El Reno resident Jillian Ferguson, a contemporary music performance major, received the Connor Hicks Memorial Endowed Music Scholarship.
El Reno Kiwanis Club 2021 scholarship winners are Hannah Skaggs, Zane Avant, and Ella McReynolds. Hannah will attend Oklahoma City University, Zane will attend Eastern Oklahoma State College and Ella will attend Oklahoma State University.
Each recipient received a $500 scholarship.
Redlands Community College recently announced students named to the college’s honor rolls for the spring 2021 semester.
Students listed on the President’s Honor Roll have completed 12 or more credit hours and have earned a GPA of not less than 3.8, with no grade less than a B — excluding 0-level courses.
The Vice President’s Honor Roll is for students who have completed 12 or more hours of coursework and have earned a GPA of 3.5 to 3.79, with no grade less than a C — excluding 0-level courses.
