A few weeks ago, former University of Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer called the Tribune office wanting the phone number for El Reno’s Joe Garcia.

Switzer and Garcia have known one another since the 1970-80s. Garcia used to patrol the Sooner sidelines, snapping photos for the Tribune as well as providing photos to OU players and coaches.

Switzer wanted to invite Garcia to a 50th anniversary celebration of his OU coaching career that was being held at a restaurant in Norman.

Friends and family filled the Calumet High School gymnasium last week to say goodbye to Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes Lt. Gov. Gilbert “Gib” LaMott Miles.

Miles, 69, died Sept. 4 at his home in Geary.

Miles was first elected as the lieutenant governor for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes in 2017, along with Gov. Reggie Wassana.

The pair began their first term January 2018.

Wassana and Miles would make tribal history by being re-elected to serve a consecutive second term, which had never happened since the inception of the 2006 Constitution.

El Reno High School Class of 2003 celebrated its 20-year reunion recently at the Crimson Creek Golf Course.

The event brought together 50 graduates from the EHS class of 2003, along with about 40 guests of alumni.

The reunion was organized by class president Tess (Maune) Mattioda, class secretary Heather (Elmenhorst) Haglund and student council president Nicki (Bosler) Byrd.

The group enjoyed fried onion burgers, live music by Matt Cowell and a night full of fun and new memories with old friends.

The number of convicted Canadian County prisoners waiting to be taken to state custody continues to rise – now nearly 28 percent of the total inmate count.

Canadian County Undersheriff Kevin Ward last week updated county commissioners on the issue.

Ward’s information showed an inmate population totaling 216, with 178 prisoners at the El Reno detention center and 38 others housed in contracted counties.

Don and Kay Bornemann are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary.

The couple were married Sept. 20, 1958, at the United Methodist Church in Union City.

Don grew up on a farm in Banner and Kay grew up on a farm east of Union City.

They resided at the Bornemann homestead in Banner until 1991 when they moved to their present home east of Union City next to where Kay was raised.

The El Reno Wranglers held their September meeting at the 4-H Building, with Jimmy Johnston opening the meeting.

Trish Duncan and Brady Armold led in the flag salute, with Gary Sorrells offering prayer.

Glen Matthews was welcomed as a guest.

The club discussed upcoming officer and board member elections that will be voted on at the October meeting.

The Wranglers will participate in the Hinton Parade on Saturday.

Next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the 4-H Building.

Lamplighters OHCE of Canadian County met recently at Mount Zion Methodist Church, with Carol Stine calling the meeting to order.

Jan Maddox read a devotional from Psalms for Women.

Maxine Little read minutes from the previous meeting, while Patricia Morrison gave the treasurer’s report.

Stine was recognized as birthday honoree.

A thank-you card was read from the 4-H thanking members for their contributions and support of their activities.

The leader lesson this month was “Not So Spooky Spiders.”

Underwood Oklahoma Home and Community Education met recently in the home of Janan Fletcher. Other members present were Vicki Duncan, Natalia Valenzuela and Bernita Davis.

The group enjoyed a spider-themed lunch to go along with the program titled “Not So Spooky Spiders.” Fletcher gave the devotional, “God and the Spider.”

The program included facts about spiders found in Oklahoma. Only two are considered venomous, the brown recluse or fiddle back and the black widow.
