Sometimes in a David vs. Goliath confrontation, the big guy gets the upper hand.

Weatherford quarterback Stone Chism, a 6-2, 217-pound junior, scored on a 4-yard run with 29.5 seconds left as the Eagles rallied in the fourth period to defeat El Reno High School’s football team 28-26.

The loss, an eerie flashback to the 2022 meeting in which the Eagles scored the game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds left in a one-point decision, dropped El Reno to 1-2 for the season.

Road swing filled with tough foes for El Reno

El Reno High School’s softball team ran into a buzz saw over the weekend as the Indians dropped four games in the Bixby Invitational, three of those against Class 6A opponents.

The losses were to Broken Arrow (5-1), Muskogee (11-3) and Bixby (12-4), followed by an 8-0 shutout at the hands of Perry. The losses came on the heels of a close 7-6 setback to Guthrie in a non-tournament game.

El Reno has now dropped its last six games to fall to 10-10 overall heading back into District 5A-2 play this week against Carl Albert and Piedmont.

City to kick up sneakers on newly named lake trail

Body

El Reno residents are invited to lace up their sneakers and celebrate the official opening of the Sunset Trail at Lake El Reno by taking part in a family fun run on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Earlier this summer, the community submitted 100 names. From the list, officials narrowed the names down to five and city council members chose the top three options.

Residents then voted on the names in a social media poll.

The final three names were Sunset Trail, Lakeview Trail and Bison Trail. Sunset Trail was voted tops.

New Night Lights

New lights are being installed at the Ashbrook Complex ball fields and city officials say the improvements will make a world of difference.

Dill Electric of El Reno is handling the installation of the new “energy efficient LED” system, said City Manager Matt Sandidge.

“They aren’t quite finished yet, they have the west-side ball field lights to replace,” Sandidge said.

City council had earlier approved the $615,000 project, which Sandidge called “a huge upgrade for the complex and big win for El Reno and our Little League sports teams.”

Body

Voters across Canadian Valley Technology Center’s school district will head to the polls on Tuesday, Sept. 12 to cast their ballots on a $75 million bond issue package.

If the proposal is approved, CV Tech will construct a public training center at its El Reno campus and make upgrades to its Chickasha campus.

Passage of the $75 million bond election will increase property taxes. The approximate cost will be $2.50 per month ($30 per year) for each $100,000 of assessed property value. Projected payoff of this bond issue is 15 years.
