A livestock show celebrating students with special needs is believed to be a first for Canadian County, but most likely not the last.

More than 75 special needs students from around the county took part in the event last week.

Held at the Canadian County Expo Center, the event also attracted 40 students who serve as PALs for their special needs classmates, as well as 45 members of the various FFA chapters in the county.

War in Ukraine hurting Oklahoma wheat farmers

From a farm in Oklahoma to growing wheat in Moldova, Kelsey Walters is now looking to her past to secure her future. 

Walters grew up on her family’s sixth-generation farm in western Oklahoma. She graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in agriculture economics, and was placed in Moldova as a Peace Corps volunteer where she met her husband, Iurie, and began a wheat farming operation.

But now their livelihood and that of wheat growers across Oklahoma is threatened by the war in Ukraine.

El Reno educator receives $6,000 scholarship

An El Reno teacher has received a $6,000 scholarship.

Shelly Hudson, who teaches first grade at Rose Witcher, received the Founders Scholarship from The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honor society for women educators that promotes excellence in education and personal and professional growth of women educators.

The organization emphasizes leadership development for its more than 50,000 members in 17 countries by providing graduate scholarships to members.

Warning of unclaimed property phone scams

As many people are aware, the State Treasurer was tasked with returning unclaimed property to the people of Oklahoma in 2000. More than half of my office is specifically tasked with this job. As rewarding of a job as this is for my office and staff, there are always bad actors to beware of. A few tips to avoid them are:

- Beware of calls with unclaimed property refund promises.

- Do not accept any protection offers in any form, for any cost, over the phone.

Indians rebound to blank Guymon

After being handcuffed to a pair of runs in the first two games of the Chickasha Baseball Festival, El Reno High School jumped back into the win column with an 8-0 run-rule shutout of Guymon. The blanking of the Tigers, the third win over Guymon in a week, moved El Reno to 10-4 on the season.

The shutout halted a two-game losing streak as the Indians lost to Bridge Creek (5-1) and Marlow (19-1) to open the event.

ER girls rally for 11th on closing holes

Following a rough start, El Reno High School’s girls golf team rallied over the closing holes to tie for 11th place out of 23 teams in the 2024 Weatherford Invitational.

The Indians carded a 411 to tie Hooker, one shot from the top 10 and eight strokes out of eighth place, which was Tuttle at 403. El Reno was 19 shots away from Elk City’s fifth-place round of 392.

“Had everyone been able to cut a few strokes off their scores earlier in the round, we could have placed eighth or better,” said El Reno head coach Cameron Wilkins.
