Jail numbers drop after state enacts incarceration law

A state law enacted last fall is being cited as the cause of a significant drop in the inmate population at the Canadian County Jail.

An analysis of weekly inmate numbers shows interesting trends over the past six months at the jail, 304 N. Evans.

Canadian County Undersheriff Kevin Ward updates the county commissioners weekly on the jail’s population.

With a capacity to hold 194 inmates, Canadian County’s detention center has seen the population decline steadily since November.

Woman, man in Piedmont charged after emaciated children found

Body

After an emaciated young girl was found hiding behind a building and five children were taken into state custody, a Piedmont woman is now charged with felony crimes related to abuse.

Tina Marie Ramirez, 43, was booked into the Canadian County Jail after a runaway child was found March 15.

On March 28, Ramirez was charged in Canadian County District Court with two counts of child neglect and four counts of child abuse, according to the Oklahoma Supreme Court Network website.

19-year-old woman hurt in U.S. 81 wreck

Body

A 19-year-old El Reno woman was injured last week in a collision that occurred on U.S. 81 at Britton Road.

The accident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. April 3.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Haylee Martin was traveling south on 81 when her vehicle collided with a vehicle driven by Mary Voss, 79, of Yukon.

Voss was traveling west on Britton. OHP said the Yukon woman failed to yield.

El Reno shoots season-low home round

Spurred by three sub-50 scores on the front nine, the Indians golf team took ninth place out of 16 teams at the 2024 El Reno High School Girls Invitational.

Played at Crimson Creek Golf Course, El Reno carded its first sub-400 team score of the season, shooting a 395 to edge out Yukon by nine strokes. Edmond Memorial won the event with a 344, followed by Marlow (348) and Heritage Hall (369).

The top nine teams all broke 400.
