Cougars drop close home matches

Body

Redlands Community College women’s soccer team, battling a rash of early-season injuries, is still seeking its first win after dropping two one-goal decisions to open NJCAA Region 2 action.

The Cougars slipped to 0-4-1 with back-to-back home setbacks to Eastern Oklahoma State College (3-2) and Northern Oklahoma College of Enid (1-0).

In the loss to Eastern, Redlands got an unassisted goal each from Ashanti Lewis and Gaby Figueroa. Lewis paced the team in shots with five, while Figueroa had two shots.

Miya Ingram and Elizabeth Bolton added a shot each.

U.S. Cavalry rides again at Fort Reno

Body

This week’s U.S. Cavalry Association’s annual Bivouac and National Cavalry Competition will mark the 10th anniversary of its arrival at Fort Reno. The colorful event unfolds free to the public from Thursday through Saturday.

The U.S. Cavalry Association made Fort Reno its home after spending decades at Fort Riley, Kan.

Being an active military base made Fort Riley difficult for visitors to tour the Association’s museum and view the historical collection the organization offers.

The El Reno, Yukon and Mustang chambers of commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week for the new Canadian County Health Department site at 6100 E. Highway 66 in El Reno.

They were welcomed by CCHD Director Maggie Jackson, who wielded the largest pair of oversized scissors.

A $3.6 million remodeling project led by construction manager Stan Lingo was recently completed on the 32,000-square-foot building. In June 2022, county commissioners spent $6 million in federal stimulus funds to purchase the seven-acre tract that formerly housed the El Reno Halliburton plant.

Counterfeit car seats on the rise

Body

Child safety advocates at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City are urging parents to be cautious of purchasing car seats online, warning they’ve seen a rise in the number of parents unknowingly buying counterfeit car seats.

Many counterfeit car seats — though they may appear legitimate at first glance — don’t meet U.S. safety standards and often lack crucial safety features that protect children in car crashes. Advocates worry that using these car seats could be putting children’s lives at risk.

For two teams that live and die with the running game, both El Reno and Piedmont high schools got their “three yards” during last week’s Canadian County bedlam game.

However, it was the Wildcats with more “clouds of dust” as Piedmont defeated El Reno 27-14 for its fourth straight win in the rivalry.

“This group of players has never beaten Piedmont and I think it’s gotten into their heads a little bit,” said El Reno head coach Russell Cook.
