City staff honored with OML awards

The city of El Reno picked up some major awards at last week’s Oklahoma Municipal League Conference. The gathering of local officials from across the state was held in Tulsa. 

City Manager Matt Sandidge was honored with the Don Rider Transparency in Government Award.

Also, City Clerk Lindsey Grigg-Moak was named Woman of the Year for cities over 5,000 population.

“I’m honored to be the recipient of the Don Rider Transparency in Government Award.” said Sandidge.

C.A.R.T. to get funding from juvenile center

After losing critical grant funding, Canadian County’s child advocacy center has gotten support from a new source.

The Child Abuse Response Team (C.A.R.T.) will receive $44,000 from the Canadian County Gary E. Miller Children’s Justice Center to provide services to victims of child abuse and neglect.

County commissioners approved a contract between the Child Welfare Citizens Advisory Board and the county.

Yukon’s Dewey sworn in as new special judge

The Canadian County judiciary officially welcomed its newest member during a ceremony last week. 

Yukon’s Lory Dewey recited the oath of office as Canadian County’s new special judge, succeeding Barbara Hatfield, who recently retired after 13 years. District Judge Khristan Strubhar administered the oath.

“To say I’m excited is an understatement,” Judge Dewey told the audience. “My thanks go to my boys (husband, Joe and sons, Zach, Mack and Riley). Without them, I would not be here.”

Yukon woman one of three killed in Friday collision

A woman from Yukon and a man from Oklahoma City were two of three people who died in a collision involving a tractor trailer at Morgan Road and Interstate 40 in the eastbound lanes Friday, Sept. 13, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports.

Kylee Byfield, 27, of Yukon, was the driver of a car that was involved in a four-vehicle collision, the patrol reported. Byfield was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:13 p.m. Friday.

Talbert named interim director of juvenile affairs

OKLAHOMA CITY – Laura Talbert has been named interim director of the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs by the office’s board.

Talbert, formerly the office’s chief legal officer, started in her new position Sept. 16.

She replaces Jeffrey Cartmell, who Gov. Kevin Stitt tapped to lead the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

El Reno blanked in non-district finale

WEATHERFORD - An inconsistent effort on offense and struggles with special teams were main contributors in El Reno High School’s football team suffering a 31-0 shutout to Weatherford in its first road test of the 2024 season.

The loss closed out non-district play for El Reno with a 1-2 record. It marked the sixth time in the last decade for the Indians to suffer a shutout loss on the field and the first in the series with Weatherford.
