El Reno High School freshman Ethan Brooks continued his assault on breaking the 16-minute barrier, running the 5-kilometer course at the 2024 Choctaw Invitational just 33 seconds shy of that feat.

Brooks posted a time of 16 minutes, 33.58 seconds to take first place over Yukon senior Austin Bucher, who posted a time of 16:50. They were the only runners in the field to break the 17-minute mark for the 3.1-mile course.

Road weary Indians fall to SFS Bernards

Road matches continue to be a tough path to the win column for El Reno High School’s volleyball team as the Indians dropped a close 3-2 match to state-ranked Santa Fe South.

El Reno won games two (25-10) and four (25-22) but lost the other three by a combined 17 points – including a 15-11 margin in the fifth-game tiebreaker.

The loss to the St. Bernards, ranked No.16 in Class 5A, left El Reno with a 10-13 overall record.

The Indians were slated to wrap up their current seven-match road swing at Noble, taking a 1-5 record over the stretch into the match with the Bears.

State-ranked Chieftains, Tigers log late-season wins

After having a win streak snapped with a tourney loss to cross-county rival Okarche, Calumet High School’s baseball team has strung together three straight victories.

The Chieftains improve to 19-3 on the fall with home wins over Lookeba-Sickles (8-0) and Arapaho-Butler (9-3). Those victories came on the heels of a 2-0 win over the host of the Amber-Pocasset (No.5/A) Invitational.

Calumet went 2-1 in the event, losing to Class A’s third-ranked Okarche (2-1) in the semifinals in extra innings. The Chieftains defeated Binger-Oney (No.18/A) 10-5 to open the tourney.

Union City and Calumet High School’s fast-pitch softball teams have fallen on hard luck in recent games, each posting back-to-back losses.

The Tigers slipped to 15-10 on the season with a cross-county rivalry loss to Okarche (9-4), followed by another home loss to Class A’s 19th-ranked Shattuck by a 12-4 tally.

Union City went 15-of-49 (.306) from the plate for the two games with only two extra base hits, a double and a triple off the bat of Jaidyn Grandstaff, who led all UCHS batters with three hits off a .500 average.

Two second-half goals lead to RCC’s first win

The proverbial monkey is off the back of Redlands Community College women’s soccer team as the Cougars picked up their first win of the season and in NJCAA Region 2 play last week.

Redlands scored two goals in the second half to defeat Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 2-1 at Memorial Stadium.

The Cougars improved to 1-6-1 on the season and 1-4 in regional action.

Both goals came from Ashanti Lewis off assists by Miya Ingram and Gaby Figueroa. Redlands had 11 shots in the match, led by Lewis with four.
